Sex & Nudity

  • None, although this version is supposedly staged as a romance between Clara and Hans-Peter, Drosselmeyer's nephew (who was once the Nutcracker). We see her take his hand a few times, and as they ride into the Kingdom of Sweets, he puts his arm around her, and she briefly leans her head on his shoulder, but that is all. There is not even any kissing, as in a later revival of this production.

Violence & Gore

  • See the Parents Guide for The Nutcracker (2009) for information on this. The 2001 and 2009 versions of this production all have pretty much exactly the same battle scene; it is just performed with different dancers, and the camera setups are different.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • See the Parents Guide for The Nutcracker (2009) for more info, but this version, the 1985 version, and the 2009 one are among the most accessible, child-friendly productions of the ballet you will ever see, and there is not a hint of sadness in any of them as there is, for instance, in the Baryshnikov version. (The Baryshnikov version, however, is among the best "Nutcracker"s ever made, and still suitable for children.)
  • Clara does not cry hysterically during the Battle with the Mice as in the original production of this version, telecast in 1985.
  • There is no horror in the 1985, 2001 and 2009 Royal Ballet versions, as there is in the 1986 Maurice Sendak version and the 2008 Chemiakin production.
  • Incidentally, the photograph you see is wrong; that is a photo of the DVD of the Berlin Ballet "Nutcracker", not this one.
