Maddy impersonates Rajeev, the person his love interest, Reena, is about to marry and attempts to woo her. However, he is unprepared for the moment when the truth will be revealed.

It's love at first sight when Madhav Shastri aka Maddy (R. Madhavan) first glimpses the beautiful Reena Malhotra (Diya Mirza). Thereafter he meets her again and finds out that she the betrothed to Rajiv. Maddy impersonates Rajiv and enters Reena's life. And they both fall in love. Then American-settled Rajiv Samra (Saif Ali Khan), who used to know Madhav from college, comes to India to marry Reena. Reena is shocked to find out that the one she has given her heart out to is a fraud. Accordingly, she decides not to do anything with him, and lets her parents (Maya Alagh and Navin Nischal) go ahead with the arranged marriage with Rajiv (or Sam). Maddy is devastated and he confronts Reena, but Reena refuses to have anything to do with him. Madhav is the loafer of the college and whiles his time outside of classes hanging with his friends and smoking cigarettes. Madhav is a goon and has a reputation for not being friends with girls. Rajeev Samra is the leader of the other major gang in the same college. Madhav and Rajeev are always at each other's throats. Rajeev is opposite to Madhav. Rajeev is smart, intelligent, sophisticated and is considered to be a ladies' man. Madhav gets Rajeev suspended from college by framing him in an attack on the girl's hostel with a bag of urine and firecrackers. Madhav and Rajeev come to blows due to this. Madhav and Rajeev leave college with nothing but bitterness for each other.

3 years later Madhav is an instructor at a software teaching academy. Madhav has been offered a chance to move to SFO for one year and a $12,000 per month salary. Madhav refuses as he wants to stay close to his dad Deendayal Shastri (Anupam Kher) and runs a video store in the city. Vicky (Vrajesh Hirjee) is Madhav's best friend.

Cupid's arrow strikes Madhav Shastri (R. Madhavan) aka "Maddy" the first time he sees the beautiful and cherubic Reena Malhotra (Diya Mirza). Madhav meets Reena at a wedding and then sees her at several locations in the city. Madhav and Vicky approach Reena's best friend Shruti (Tanaaz Currim Irani) for Reena's phone number. Vicky tells Shruti that Madhav is in love with Reena. Shruti tells Madhav that Reena's parents have already fixed her marriage to someone. Madhav calls Reena to pursue her. Turns out Reena was waiting for the phone call of her betrothed named Rajeev. Shruti picks up Madhav's call thinking it is Rajeev, and this is how Madhav learns that Reena has never seen Rajeev and their parents have agreed to let them spend time together to get to know each other. Rajeev is supposed to come to USA the following week.

Having fallen head over heels in love with Reena, Madhav decides that the only chance he has of winning over his one true love is by impersonating Rajeev. This is Deendayal's idea that Madhav pretends to be Rajeev, who has come to Bombay a week earlier than planned. Deendayal also asks Madhav to cut Reena's phone connection, so she can no longer get in touch with Rajeev. Their meetings turn into a life-altering whirlwind romance, and within the first few meetings, they both fall in love with each other. Reena also wants to stay in Mumbai. Since Shruti has already seen Madhav, he makes sure that he avoids her at all times.

Just when their love reaches its peak and Madhav decides he must come clean to Reena so as to be able to build an honest future with her, the American-settled Rajeev Samra (Saif Ali Khan), an old rival of Madhav from their college days, enters the scene to marry Reena, as was already decided. Reena is shocked to find out that the one she has truly given her heart to is a fraud and a fake. Shruti realizes that the person who spent time with Reena was Madhav.

Heart-broken and unable to accept the lies and deceit Madhav used to win her love, she decides not to have anything to do with him and lets her parents, mother (Smita Jaykar) & father (Navin Nischol), go ahead with her arranged marriage with Rajeev. Madhav confronts Rajeev and realizes that Rajeev is his rival from college. Madhav warns Rajeev that Reena loves him, and that Rajeev should simply go back to America and leave Reena. Reena tells Rajeev the truth. Rajeev confronts Madhav and gives him his wedding card.

Madhav manages to confront Reena, trying to explain to her that he even though he lied about himself, he did so because he found no other viable means, and he truly loves her, but Reena stubbornly refuses to reason with him.

Devastated, Madhav decides to leave India and go to San Francisco and start a new life. By this time, Rajeev starts preparation for his marriage with Reena. But at the time of marriage ceremony, Rajeev observes that Reena has no excitement and charm for marriage. He then takes Reena aside and asks her the truth: whether she loves him or Madhav. He insists that she use a method to decide (which was told to him by Madhav): Close her eyes, clear her mind and think of the person she truly loves. Reena closes her eyes, and instantly Madhav races across in her thoughts. She lies to Rajeev that the method doesn't work, and that she will not use this method to take any decisions of her life from hereon.

Madhav is at the airport, ready to leave India. All his friends and his dad are there to see him off, when Rajeev and Reena arrive. Seeing Reena, Madhav is astounded, but he thinks that Reena has gotten married to Rajeev. Rajeev goes over to Madhav and hands over Reena to him.

At the end Madhav proposes to Reena, and she agrees. Naturally, Rajeev is a little heart-broken, however, he puts a brave face in front of Reena and Madhav and leaves. Both Madhav and Reena get married and lead a happy life.
