Lost Hearts starring Richard Pearson, first shown on ITV in 1966
I saw the Richard Pearson 'Lost Hearts' when I was about 12 and I had to sleep with the light on for the next couple of weeks. I have always wanted to see the episode (by far the most powerful in an outstanding series) again. I remember the children in their shrouds, the long fingernails and the torn curtains blowing through the French windows. I comforted myself by believing that justice had been done but the conclusion was notably gruesome for the time, and stayed with me. If you ever spot this version of Lost Hearts on DVD, snap it up. You are in for a treat, or at least I hope so. I was, after all, only 12 when I saw it last but I still think it is powerful. Also Richard Pearson was a superb character actor, able to combine a cheery and avuncular personality with a sinister undertow.
