Best Dating Show EVER!
Davy Boy16 September 2002
The producers of "Shipmates" are absolute geniuses. Or maybe they aren't. Either way, Shipmates is an awesome example of how to produce a dating show. On other similar shows, the "contestants" are set up and filmed over a matter of hours. The difference is that Shipmates takes place over 3 days. It is my contention that NO 2 complete strangers can spend every minute of 3 days together and come out the other side with anything but disdain for each other. This is the brilliance of Shipmates. The couples almost never get along, which leads to endless hilarity. Add to that the wit of Chris Hardwick, and you get a show that, intentionally or not, has my friends and I in hysterics every night. I would argue that the type of person that doesn't enjoy Shipmates is missing out on one of life's great pleasures; laughing at other people's misery.

Chris hardwick is a comedic genius

Chris hardwick is so HILARIOUS.

Everything that comes out of his mouth leaves me rolling. I don't know why this show even had writers. Seriously, everything he says is just hilarious. Barak Goldman(credited "writer") must of had a boring job. What did this guy do all day? Just sit around and edit footage to create conflict. pfft. Why couldn't they just show a nice couple who got along and sat around getting to know each other better, that would be a good show!!! Also more Aria Giovanni for sure. Holy crap that chick was hot. If i was on a cruise with her for 3 days my dick would need a defibrillator. Seriously after the 3 days were over people would think that we're Siamese twins stuck in doggy style since birth.

Funny show

Here in New York, "Shipmates" is on weekdays at 4:30 PM and 11:30 PM, (following "Blind Date" both times). I LOVE this show! Don't get me wrong - the daters are, for the most part, painfully stupid. While this in itself IS funny, it's not why I love this show so much. It's because beautiful host Chris Hardwick has it all-- throughout the date he hilariously bashes the daters; either while singing, dancing, rhyming, or performing some other silly antics. He's extremely funny, SO cute, and quite frankly, the only reason to watch the show!! "Shipmates" rules!

What is better than a blind date? A three-day long blind date confined on a cruise ship!
mauthier24 March 2005
This dating show sets up two people on a blind date on a cruise ship for three days. The editing is humorous but not overdone with jokes. For the most part the lame daters provide more than enough entertainment. The three days are condensed into a half hour psychological experiment. The couples almost always get along well the first day, but later there is often the friction that comes from spending too much time with someone. Chris Hardwick's dead-pan humor is perfect for the show. The show is obviously for entertainment sake, and he doesn't try to take himself or the show too seriously. His humor is witty and not overdone, and he also has the perfect minimal on screen time as the show is not about him but about the lame daters. Thank you Spike TV for running it in syndicate.

Chris Hardwick is the greatest thing since sliced bread!

I'm a guy, and I'm totally hetero, but I LOVE Chris Hardwick. His witty, insightful commentary MAKES this show. Its the first thing I've ever seen him in, but I want to check out more of his work. I'm sure somebody else could write funny things for a different host, but no delivery could ever reach his level. Often the daters are mismatched, and I suspect that the powers that be do this intentionally, so that when sparks fly, we're there to see the action. What might be neat is if Chris Hardwick ever visited Rendez-View, which is another great show, a lot like this, except the date is critiqued step by step, which is neat. I would love to see an Uber Dating show, where they got everybody together, Greg Proops, Ellen Ladowsky, Chris Hardwick, and Aisha Tyler on ONE SHOW! It would be so sweet. Maybe Adam and Dr Drew could visit once in awhile. Often the daters are shallow and cheap, classless, charicatures of humanity. It's a total blast. If you haven't ever seen this show, or Rendez-View, do yourself a kindness, and check it out, you won't regret it.

A very entertaining show.

I watch shipmates every evening. Watching the people on their dates fight with each other is very amusing. I always look forward to seeing who the new contestants will be each day. My favorite part of the show is Chris Hardwick's comments to introduce the scenes. He has a great dry sense of humor which tends to grow on you the more you watch. If you're looking for a good way to end your day with a good chuckle, tune in and check it out.

I like watching this show, as I am getting ready for school at 7:30 in the morning. Yes, it's stupid how whenever a couple doesn't get along, one or both of them is sent to that cheesy club, and is grinding on the dance floor with the first person they meet, someone they describe as "Great!!!!!11!!!" though they are actually just some loser, disgusting beast of a person who wants five seconds of fame. Oh, and also that many pent house models show up on this show, and are often paired up with funny looking men. And that the women always dress slutty (well, duh). And they are all the sort of (boring, yucky) people who would be between the 8-10 average's at hotornot.com. But it is entertaining fluff on half awake senses. And some of the little commentary is quite tactful, and I LIKE Chris Hardwick. Hahahaha. Byeeee!

Show sucks...
femaldahyde24 March 2004
... but I would not hesitate to meet the harder parts of Chris Hardwick. Many torturous nights on third shift forced to watch bad tv at lunch.

(shipmates) Chris knew the show was awful and he made up for it with the dryest of humor and absolutly artful delivery. I am checking out more of his work. No matter the script, or scene, or whatever "they" have him do I am sure I will enjoy. Chris has mastered the art of savoy.

(of course I'd tell him this but he refused my offer to go on a shipmate cruise with him)

Should be called "Shipwrecked"
dgordon-111 April 2002
This dating show has got to be one of the worst on TV. It is highly predictable. The premise of the show is that they hook up a couple on a blind date & send them on a cruise. Whatever happened to just going for coffee? From there, the date usually starts off with a bang, and the potential couple seem to be in dating bliss. Usually by the 2nd day, the couple are at each other's throats. Where do they get these people from? Every show is the same, the faces may change, but the show doesn't. It would be nice to see a happy couple once in a while. I know the producers of this & other shows think that the viewing public prefer to see dating couples in turmoil, which in turn creates a more entertaining show. Though, fighting couples can be funny, it gets tired when that is all the show is. At least with shows like "Love Connection" in the '80s & new shows like "The 5th Wheel", they mix it up a little & are not so predictable. I thought "Studs" in the '90s was bad, but "Shipmates" takes the award for being one of the worst shows in syndication to date.

Class overboard: Shipmates
cellomaster27 December 2002
"Shipmates", the dating show that pairs up singles on a three-day blind date on a paradise cruise ship, is actually pretty funny. I think the idea of the show is ok, but what makes the show "no class" are the idiots they pair up.

Most of the time, the singles involved on the date have a good first day with each other, but by the second day, they're practically fighting. Both singles have video diaries and they let loose something fierce on each other. It's also not unusual to see each single go their seperate ways, and find more people to party with (a few actually admit to having one-night-stands behind their date's backs). Call me crazy and old-fashioned, but this seems pretty trashy to me.

By the way, the host, Chris Hardwick, better known as the guy from the MTV dating show 'Singled Out', is a total dolt. He's thinks he's funny, but he's now. In fact, he is the WORST part of the show.

So very stupid...
culwin24 September 2001
In yet another pathetic attempt to capitalize on the success of "Survivor", the money-hungry producers of this show put 2 people aboard a "luxury" cruise for a date, and film the whole thing for our viewing pleasure. The cruise is obviously low-budget. For some reason all these "Survivor" clones (like "Love Cruise" and "Temptation Island") think that: water + "reality" = hit show! They couldn't be more wrong. Why would I possibly care if they are on a ship?? I guess it is supposed to make me think they are having a really exotic date. Instead, all it does is make me think that I would rather be doing anything else than stuck on a ship with two idiots who I could care less about. Someone should take up a collection for Chris Hardwick, because after "Singled Out" got canceled, he must be really hurting for money. If he is willing to do this show, the only worse place in Hollywood to be working would be fast food.

Since this show is on at like 2:30 in the morning where I live, I am guessing that I might be one of the few people who has ever seen the show, and I expect that it will die a quick and painless death. Basically, this show is boring and stupid, and the only people I would recommend it to are people in prison who have no other form of entertainment, or maybe a class that teaches people how to waste money.

What on earth is the appeal?
drew_graham126 April 2003
Try as I might, I can hardly imagine that the appeal for Shipmates is that it's a "great dating show." Perhaps host Chris Hardwick keeps SOME coming back, but why do people REALLY watch this show? Two words: Sex and violence. Each date ends in either one of these two ways. They either end up in the bedroom (sometimes before the end...) or ready to kill each other. I guess people who don't get enough S & V on other trashy shows like Blind Date and ElimiDate watch this show to get even more.

What is this world coming to when TV resorts to physical intimacy or aggression between perfect strangers, relying on these degrading elements to get people to watch. The really sad part was that it works. Oh the humanity... It's like people aren't people anymore, they're objects whose primary use is to entertain, no matter by what sexual or violent means. Decency is definitely a thing of the past.

While Shipmates has one or two redeeming episodes, they somehow manage to get the most arrogant, immoral, superficial, disgusting examples of humanity possible on display. You'd do much better to watch Survivor for intelligent, interesting and moral (comparatively) entertainment.
