One of my all time favourite series, low budget, but fantastically made, think of your local council estate, then the area where some of the houses have been bought by the residents. Suddenly appears old style lanterns in the front garden and white picket fences... but still in the same area, a student house and a house still owned by the council which the council have moved in the notorious family from a close by estate.
You have an ex military man, late 30s single, but still thinks he is in charge of the area and will try to do anything with a military approach...
The old couple, who are in charge of the neighbourhood watch and plan hard for those local meetings where nobody comes.
The bigot builder who has insulted everyone in the area at least once. The husband and wife don't have sex, so the wife spends her day drinking (and leaning against the washing machine in a fast spin). The daughter is expecting with the son of the Asian family (he loves that) and a son that only seems to want to wear women's clothes.
The Asian family who own the local shop (which the wife and son burnt down in protest to stop working there) Two students, one whom seems to live off his grant and sits in their upstairs room (without a window pane for some strange reason) smoking cannabis putting the world to rights... (the BBC website link for the residents was made to look like the students had made it... very cheap but very fitting.
A couple desperately trying to have a baby and in the end the father kidnaps a baby when out one day which the wife in the end reluctantly gives up.
A gay couple, one camp as Christmas and one not so sure... "Mind you don't cut yourself as we'll all end up on the slab"... possibly one of the best said lines on television, which decide to split up as the non-camp one decides to do a bunk on their wedding day...
A single mother and a baby daughter in a council house, where to keep her home she does telephone sex lines and ends up doing a blue movie with a neighbour to ensure her secret is kept.
Then, the neighbours from hell (or just an addition?!). A man who is known from the police to the local barman, a nasty piece of work who is only out for himself, a down trodden wife who tries in vain to better herself, but ruled by three unruly kids, who are stealing everything in sight and generally putting fear into the local community.
More strife than your local objection to speed humps or mobile phone masts. Only six episodes, but a fantastic little comedy, showing England at its possibly best. Loved every second! Not released on video, which is a shame, if by any chance you have the opportunity to watch this masterpiece, I would advise you to, and watch them all.
