Can't stand up to the original.

Men In Black 2 was a real disappointment for me. While the actors did a pretty good job, especially Smith, there just isn't a cure for a poor script once in production. The movie really had a "sequel" kind of feel, playing off partial events of the first film. The story was, in a word... bad, at best. It wasn't thought out well, and seemed very choppy and incoherent at times.

In the first flick, the MIB Organization had a kind of "elite" force feel. You had a few special agents, and it had a "clandestine" kind of feel to it. In the sequel, the MIB Organization has a JROTC Summer Camp vibe.

The movie wasn't terrible or anything.. it just lacked the "coolness" (for lack of a better phrase) of the first movie. A lot of the same old humor was recycled from the first to the second, and didn't really add any originality to the MIB Universe.

A perfect analogy would be Episode 1 to the first 3 films. Was it decent? Yeah. Is it worthy of bearing it's title? Not really.

Poor script, nice effects, descent (uh) acting
RHostens9 August 2002
The trailers get you to the movie, but the movie just wasn't worth my 8.50.. it has some good effects, but the storyline.. yech, i like tommy lee jones and will smith as actors, they have both done some good films, but i wish they hadn't added this one to their resume's. To be honest, the book is better..

Better than the first.

I loved this movie. As a big fan of the first one, I've been waiting for this one all summer. The scene where J goes to get K out of retirement at the post office is hilarious. I love the way they acted like they were going to repeat a scene or feature from the first movie, and then changed it to keep you laughing and never knowing what to expect. As in the first, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones worked very well together. Rip Torn is a great actor, and I was glad to see him in this one. All in all, I recommend this movie to everyone and hope they make a third one.

Disappointing

I eagerly anticipated seeing this film, as I enjoyed the first one. Unfortunately, the screenplay of this sequel fell very flat. The cast did their best with what they were given, I cannot fault them for that. It appeared that the majority of the film was hastily put together. The ending itself was probably the most disastrous. Will Smith stated in an interview that the sequel was stalled due to finding a "decent script." I shudder to think what the previous versions were like. Perhaps they should've waited a bit longer.

Nice effects but no story!
tmichaelny@aol.com2 August 2002
There was a very thin story line here. The characters were inconsistent and there was absolutely no build-up as in the first one. If it weren't for the fact that i saw this as a cheap matinee AND i was able to sneak into another movie afterwards, I would have been VERY upset! :)

The special effect were fun, though!

can somebody tell me something...was "Martha" supposed to be an alien?

Not at all what I expected
angelina411 July 2002
When I saw the previews and the trailors for this movie, I thought it was going to be funny. I expected it would match up with the previous movie, considering they had waited long enough to produce it. I was completely wrong. Maybe they should have re-thought this whole movie. Just threw in the towel with the first one. The story line is as if it was written by a 5 yr old. And any funny or entertaining parts are shown in the trailor and previews. Save your money; you can get the movie's worth by watching TV.

just got worse...

I first saw MIB and I thought, mmmm, o.k., this is pretty cool. Then I saw Blade, and I thought, mmmm, this is also pretty cool. But then what happened? They released Blade 2. And I thought, mmmmmm, it is exactly the same as Blade! So why bother making a sequel to it? Well, I was in for a greater shock today when I went to see MIB 2. It is even worse than Blade 2.

Right from the start, I knew exactly what is going to happen in the movie. Even the jokes are so poorly executed, there are no laughs at all in the cinema even when it is composed of mainly kids. Acting in this movie is sub par as if they all wanted to treat this movie as if it is a joke. Even the speical effects were done as if they don't really care about the ratings in the box office.

However, there is one good thing about this movie. The director obviously was clear the group of audience this movie is to appeal to. Since that this is made clear, there is no mix up as to what type of film it is and hence, holds no identity problems. For the aged 15 and under, this movie is great.

A minor disappointment
James Yuille29 July 2002
Despite the law of diminishing returns, I was actually looking forward to seeing this film, because a few years have passed since the original film's release, suggesting that more care had been taken with it than is usually the case with sequels. Also, the original stars were back, and it has Lara Flynn Boyle in it, so it's worth seeing just for her.

Will Smith has said that one of the reasons for it's delay is that they kept altering and improving on the script. If this is the case I can only imagine what the original was like, because the story itself is weak and disappointingly dosen't follow up many of the threads from the original. That said, there are more hits than misses here and like the original it does end on an inspired note.

Overall, likeable but forgettable and a minor disappointment. 5/10
