Quality and success do not always go hand in hand. Sometimes a fantastic movie will bomb at the box office. Sometimes a great TV series does not get picked up for a second season. Sometimes a beautiful music album will fall under the radar. Just because something is deemed a failure does not mean it wasn’t worth looking at. Such is the story of the PC Engine, otherwise known as the TurboGrafx-16. While it did well in Japan, its attempt to get a share of the North American market crashed and burned.
It wasn’t even the fault of the console’s performance. Sure, the controller was a bit lame, and the system needed better third-party support, but what was there was usually pretty damn good. It was simply overshadowed by the war between Nintendo and Sega. Now it’s looked back on fondly, seen as a treasure trove...

Walt Disney World Resort remained shut down on Monday in the wake of Hurricane Irma, marking the first time in the park’s history that it was closed for two consecutive days, according to Yahoo.
Officials announced Friday that the Orlando theme parks and water parks would close its doors early on Saturday. They hoped to resume normal operations Tuesday, according to their website‘s full list of closures. However, sustained weather conditions or damage to the resort could result in further shut downs.
This is the fifth time Disney World has closed since opening in 1971, all in anticipation of hurricanes.

That old saying about imitation being the sincerest form of flattery is one that can be applied to video games from day one. Early classics like Pac-Man saw their fair share of imitators, many companies tried to capitalize on the “animal with an attitude” aspect that Sonic the Hedgehog introduced, and bigger companies have tried in recent years to duplicate the success of titles like Call of Duty.
All three of these aforementioned examples usually resulted in far from successful products, but the practice still continues to this day. Still, it’s not often that you see something like Dinocide. Developer AtomicTorch has made it clear in promotional material that the game draws inspiration from the classic Adventure Island series, and anyone familiar with those games will notice similarities between the two, both visually and mechanically.
In reality, similarities might be a bit too generous. Not only does Dinocide play...

Running, collecting fruit, throwing hammers. All the ingredients you need for a simple yet fun game. Ryan looks back at Wonder Boy...
To our jaded, seen-it-all 21st century eyes, Wonder Boy looks like the product of a more innocent time. This is, after all, a game about a lad in a loin cloth who rides a skateboard and throws hammers at snails. In terms of scale and sophistication, it isn’t exactly Fallout 4.

But there’s something charming about Wonder Boy’s simplicity: the way it forces you to relentlessly press forward, balancing carefully-timed jumps with the need to get to the end of the level as quickly as possible. Its bold, chunky graphics. Its tinny music, which sounds like Schroeder out of Peanuts playing the...

After I did the Super Nintendo commercial for the video game Super Adventure Island, the next acting gig I landed was for a music video for a rock band that called themselves Giant.
I landed the lead in the video and was pretty stoked about it. I played a kid who builds this amazing massive sand castle on the beach. What was fun about this video is that I actually had a love interest in the story. I meet a girl on the beach, and my way to her heart is to show off my sandcastle building skills. Little do I know that I'm being stalked by a gang of other little kids who are going to attack me and destroy the castle. After that the girl leaves me and I'm left alone to wallow in my grief, embarrassed and defeated.
I always loved the beach, so being on the...

The very first professional gig that I got as an actor through my agent was a video game commercial for Super Nintendo. The video game was Super Adventure Island, and the commercial is as cheesy as 1990s video game ads could possibly get.
I remember only going to one audition for the lead role in the commercial. I excitedly read my lines, they liked my look, and they wanted to hire me. There was one little hang up though. I might have been too short. I've always had height issues. They kept testing my reach because in the commercial I had to pull down a screen in front of a classroom full of kids. After a few tests showing them I could do it they gave me the part.
A few weeks later I showed up to a sound stage where they were shooting the commercial. This would be the...

Artist Greg Martin, responsible for a range of classic game covers in the 80s and 90s, including Sonic The Hedgehog, has sadly passed away.
If Greg Martin's name sounds unfamiliar, then his artwork will remain immediately recognisable to a generation of gamers.
Although his box art for the Us release of Sonic The Hedgehog on the Sega Mega Drive was arguably his most widely-seen piece of work (the blue blur was the mascot that sold a legion consoles throughout the early 90s), his work graced a variety of game covers, from the Game Boy version of Adventure Island, via Taz-Mania on the Mega Drive to Speedy Gonzales: Los Gatos Bandidos on the Super Nintendo.
Martin's artwork was bold, colourful and full of humour - a talent he honed during his tenure at Hanna Barbera, where he worked on cartoons such as The Flintstones,...
