Christopher Walken, Richard Harris, and Jeremy Sisto in Caesar (2002)

Goofs

Caesar

Edit

Continuity

The two actors performing the 'Alexander' sketch in the play at the beginning of the film are seen again towards the end where they make fun of Caesar's relationship with Cleopatra. There is a gap of a few decades between the events, where Caesar has aged from about 20 to 50, yet the actors haven't aged at all.
In the scene where Calpurnia goes to Brutus's wife, Portia to tell her how glad she is that Brutus is with Caeser that day, Portia drops the goblet she is holding, and it breaks. Then we see Calpurnia's face, and then back to the floor where they both bend down to pick up the whole cup, not the pieces. Also this goblet would have likely been gold, and therefore not have broken at all.
In the final scene, as Calpurnia runs to the Senate to warn Caesar of the plot against him, her shoelace is visibly untied as she rounds the corner entering the courtyard. In the next shot of her running across the courtyard, it is tied again.
When Brutus stabs Caesar, the knife is bloody, then clean, then is bloody again.
In the final scene when Calpunia rushes to Caesar, she drops her shawl very close by. In the next scene (seen above) the shawl has gone.

Factual errors

Sulla did not die as dictator of Rome. He resigned his position in 80 B.C., two years before his death in 78 B.C. He died a slow death from liver failure while writing his memoirs, not from a sudden heart attack.
Caesar and Pompey are shown as the only leaders of Rome after Sulla's death. The other member of the triumvirate, Marcus Licinius Crasus, who heavily financed Caesar's rise to Consul, was omitted rather than shift focus from the two.
Although Cato was seven years younger than Caeser, in this film he is played by 59 year-old Chris Walken as opposed to 28 year-old Jeremy Sisto's Caeser.
In the film Vercingetorix is shown being killed by sword in his prison cell shortly after Caeser's return to Rome in 51 B.C. In actuality he was held for five years and was publicly paraded during Caeser's triumphal celebration in 46 B.C, then ritually strangled in prison.
During his lifetime, Caesar was married three times, not twice as depicted in this miniseries.

Anachronisms

Pompey's third triumph took place on September 29, 61 BC (his 45th birthday) and celebrated the victories over the pirates and in the Middle East. During Pompey's triumph soldiers can be seen carrying standards with the words "X GEMINA" on them. The tenth legion "Gemina" was not levied until 58 BC and by Julius Caesar, not Pompey. And Caesar was Consul in 61, that didn't happen until 59 BC.
