Thirty years before Lee Ermey played the drill instructor from hell in Full Metal Jacket, Jack Webb played a similarly frightning Sergeant in The DI (although without the foul words). Given his portrayal of Dragnet's no nonsense Sergeant Friday, Webb is an excellent choice to narrate this crisp, straightforward documentary about what Marine boot camp was like in the 1970s. Its very enjoyable and reminded me of when I was in Army basic (especially the neat haircut they give you). This documentary does a good job pointing out that despite their fearsome reputation DIs in the Marines and drill sergeants in the Army have one of the most important jobs in the military molding our young service people into warriors. There is a wonderful conclusion to the film showing the recruits graduating as full fledged Marines.
