A 'Sculpture' For the Eye and the Soul
This film was so beautiful I almost wept. Never have I been struck so deeply by an 'experimental' film as I was with Brakhage's MADE MANIFEST. Pure silent and visual expression gave way to something so much more in me.
Brakhage's incredible eye, and the capturing of his wholly personal vision, culminate in an emotion-filling short film largely focused on sparks of blue light and the slow-motion lulling of sparkling blue waves. Changes in tempo, tone (both colours and pacing) and rich abstract patterning almost create the feeling of one creating a sculpture with moving light and forms. The film becomes nearly tangible in the vision, and so intimate as to suggest the filmmaker's love-making with the gathering and process of making the film itself. Whereas these qualities are often cited as intrinsic in the works of Stan Brakhage, MADE MANIFEST goes beyond not only his usual level of mastery, surpasses his previous accomplishments, but truly divines that the piece lives a life complete and beyond the vision of the creating artist. The film breathes and gives. And Brakhage has shared a magic so fully of his soul.
10/10. A gift for both the heart and mind, through the light of a lens.
