Magnificent

As a fan of opera and Renato Bruson is very quickly becoming a favourite of mine, I saw this La Scala production on DVD. And I am so glad I did, for of the many La Scala productions I have seen on DVD/video, this Lucia Di Lammermoor is one of my favourites. The costumes are spectacular and the sets are huge and colourful, while the video directing is just great. The orchestra and conducting are superb, and bring the intensity of the compelling story and amazing music to life. The singing and acting is as good as can be. The chorus are genuinely believable, the most believable opera chorus I have seen in a while actually, while out of the principals(who throughout cannot be faulted) I was most impressed by Renato Bruson as Enrico and especially Mariella Devia as Lucia(her Mad scene has to be seen and heard to be believed). Overall, magnificent. 10/10 Bethany Cox
