Yuppie For Ransom

The Lawrence Brothers are involved in another family project for the Disney company in Jumping Ship. The same two characters that Joey and Andy Lawrence played in Horse Sense are having some more adventures. If I may say so, some more serious adventures.

In Horse Sense Joey was a cousin of Andy who helped save his cousin's ranch. But there he was only facing some business sharks. Some real sharks can be a problem as the cousins take a trip down under.

Brother Matt joins them and his hair is dyed blond possibly to disguise a rather obvious family resemblance. He's a young charter boat captain and the boat isn't exactly Club Med type accommodations. That's because Joey's dad has put some limits on his free spending yuppie son. But on their Australian vacation, Joey and Andy attract the attention of some pirates who think that Joey might be worth a few bucks when he starts flashing money around.

They all wind up on a deserted tropical island and have to fend for themselves and at this point the movie is a combination of The Admirable Crichton and Swiss Family Robinson. The Aussie and island scenery is quite lovely to behold and so are the two older Lawrence brothers. All in all a pleasant piece of viewing.

Cute for Kids.
RadiantMess18 August 2001
Jumping Ship was a cute movie, some of the action might be a little intense for some of the target audience (7-10 year old's), but it should be on the money for 11 and 12 year old's. Andrew Lawrence has grown some, well he should've, he is human. But the fact that the triplets are working together on a show is refreshing. But one thing I found a bit comical was the fact that the name Jake Hunter (Played by Matthew Lawrence) is almost the exact same as one of his previous characters, Jack Hunter, on the TV series 'Boy Meets World'. But again, on the movie, the plot is alright, the characters are alright, but the fact that a crocodile was in the ocean seemed a bit, well, odd. But I'm not an animal expert so I wouldn't know.

DCOM Done Well

7 stars may seem like a generous rating for this made-for-tv adventure movie, but Jumping Ship achieves what it was going for. It's lighthearted, fun and entertaining. Considering that it's a Disney Channel Original Movie, and that it's a sequel, Jumping Ship is well made and avoids the complete juvenile silliness that one might expect from a Disney Channel movie. Though it's a sequel, it stands well on its own. I can say that because I didn't know it was a sequel until I researched it a bit after finishing it. The story is about three guys, who are real life brothers, who get stranded on an island after escaping modern day pirates. It should be a nostalgic experience for Millennials who grew up enjoying this movie and other works featuring the Lawrence brothers from around the same time. A fun fact about Matthew Lawrence's character, is that his name is Jake Hunter in this movie. Most will remember his character from Boy Meets World who's name was Jack Hunter. Coincidence? There is something fun about watching siblings acting together. Whether you're looking to jump into a childhood favorite of yours, or just trying to find something safe for your family to enjoy together, Jumping Ship is worth jumping into.

unrealistic time lapse
AnaBH22 August 2001
The movie was quite cute, typical Disney-type movie. Joey and Andy take a trip to Australia and due to false advertisement and being pick-pocketed, they end up on a broken down ship passing off as a luxury charter boat. Needless-to-say, they run into all sorts of trouble and end up being shipwrecked. Pirates are chasing them and they have to rely on each other. Well, the REALLY unrealistic part is how the time passes, the days are flashed on the screen as the movie goes on, the boys are always clean and never seem to need a shave. Joey and Matt both have perfect goatees and even after 11 days look as clean and impeccable as the day they landed in Australia. Lots of goofs, be on the look out, but watchable.

Matt's big piece of the acting pie
Guitar-818 April 2006
It's very rare that Matthew Lawrence gets to be in something for at least 50% of the movie or TV show. Since Brotherly Love got canned, he had a non-speaking cameo in Horse Sense (1%), had 25% in The Hot Chick, 30% in Family Tree & some of the Boy Meets World episodes had him do token lines.

Only H-E Double Hockey Sticks & Jumping Ship are the happy exceptions for a big part. I'm glad he did Jumping Ship to get rid of his drought. Loved the movie overall as well.

The only other droughts Matt has are singing (Boy Meets World-As Time Goed By-2000) & doing a talk show (Donny & Marie-2000), while Joseph & Andy did Wayne Brady.

Fun movie to watch, but some what predictable.
acearms24 October 2003
This one ranked some where between a comedy and a not so action action. I've enjoyed watching the Lawrence brothers in several of their movies and this one brought them all together. The plot was a given, but it was fun to sit through their adventure. The villains were just that, reminding me of those in the comedies of Dudley Do Right; however, they didn't have the long black mustaches. Enjoy, its worth watching.

Good Movie
angelllic0073 November 2001
Watching the previews of this movie, I have to say it didn't look that good. However, I was surprised. It had a little bit of everything in it and the scenery was beautiful. The Lawrence brothers are incredibly talented and there hott! The first movie was good too, but its sequel is better. Out of 10, I give it an 8.

Jumping into a new sequel! Very good!
WhiteTigerPat17 August 2001
Just wanted to say that the original movie Horse Sense is a better movie, but i'm glad to see all the brothers back again! It's a real treat for the whole family and it's just fun and a lot of action. For a Disney movie and being a sequel it's pretty good for t.v. Joey, Matt and Andy will be stars and will get great roles in the future! So keep up the great work guys. Ohh wait a minute the movie is about... Wait just watch the movie. It's fun and if you like the 1st movie you will like this one! Out of 4 stars I give it 3 stars.

Since it aired, yesterday,I have seen Jumping Ship twice.I have enjoyed all the movies I have seen with the Lawrence boys. This one was probably my favorite. You can see the bond between Joey and Andy really well in this movie. And with Matthew, you just kind of get the impression that he really enjoys fighting with his older brother and getting paid for it.I like the Swiss Family Robinson meets Rodeo Drive feel of the entire show.It has a nice story line that anyone from 8-43(my mom)could enjoy.I hope this will be a start for a lot more movies with the Lawrence brothers together. A Story of Survival
Nakoma-219 August 2001
I found the movie to be well done. The actors, the Lawrence Brothers, have an excellent chemistry. In this sequel to "Horse Sense," Michael (Joey Lawrence) is still immature and in ways Tommy (Andrew Lawrence)is very mature. Michael is unemployed, using his parents' money to finance a trip to Australia with his cousin Tommy. He is over the budget, because he has invited a girl to meet him there from Hawaii. As a result, he will have to get a job when he returns home (he does not want to work for his dad as a file clerk, so he is job-shopping while on vacation. Looking for something easy). He is still very spoiled and has no clue why he should take responsibility for his actions. Things happen, his wallet is stolen, and he has chartered a second rate boat to go out on for a couple of days. Things go bad and you see where Michael is still immature, but Tommy handles things very well. Jake (Matthew Lawrence) is the captain of the boat, and he is somewhat of a snob, because he believes that both guys are wealthy. Once he discovers that Tommy knows what hard work is, the two begin to bond. The action continues when they run into Pirates. The movie is very well written and I look forward to another movie to continue the story of Michael and Tommy, with Jake included.

A fun adventure for adolecent kids
chrishewittpiano16 July 2002
This Movie stars all of the three Lawrence brothers. Andy has grown a lot since the last movie, "Horse Sense". Joey and Matt stayed about the same, though. I have seen this film numerous times and I enjoy it every time. I have to say that after reading other reviews that I like both movies equally. "Horse Sense" has a lot more people in it, has a more familiar surrounding, and more of a story. In "Jumping Ship" all they do is shipwreck on an island to put it bluntly. I has much more action than the first and more scarier scenes. The movies are totally different and the only comparison is that they share the same characters. What is also good about "Jumping Ship" is that the plot is not predictable. It is very suspenseful and interesting. But it could have possibly been just as good if they would have used a crowd of three other brothers so that the Lawrences would not be in so many movies. But their expertise was needed and it is an adventure flick that everyone should sit through once. It is probably the most fun for kids 7-13 years of age, but Adults would like it too.

Eh.

Its more fun than drowning, but thats about it. It really had a minimal story, and the acting wasn't great.

I think the Lawrences are good together because they have chemistry, but in this movie there just wasn't any.

I don't think it was bad because of the Lawrence Bros. though. I am actually quite fond of them in Horse Sense, Brotherly Love, Boy Meets world, and Oliver Beene( If that is still on).

If its the only thing on, You might want to watch it, but otherwise don't give it the time of day.

really good family movie
timu5915 January 2002
The Lawrence Brothers are probably the best comic actors around. They work so well together and they they are genuine is what makes the movie work. The plot is outlandish, but the Lawrence Brothers make it work well. They take a crazy story and make it believable. Disney should release this film on video and DVD.

Adorable...
RosanaBotafogo3 December 2022
Michael intends to spend quality time with his cousin Tommy aboard a luxury yacht until he discovers that the chartered yacht is actually a rusty old fishing boat. When modern-day pirates chase the boat, the boys are forced to jump off, stranded on a deserted island with the captain, Jake Hunter.

Continuation of the equally cute "A special way with horses" if there we already had the participation of the two brothers, here we have the participation of the three brothers, what a beautiful thing, perfect chemistry, familiar, a basic script, but very cute everything that entertains and makes our heart warm... Adorable...

and I thought the first was bad
EvieOConnel17 August 2001
The only thing worse than this was Horse Sense. The only thing that could possibly keep you watching are the gorgeous looks of Matt and Joey Lawrence. It's not possible to not be completly bored with this movie. But you can't help but want to go cuddle Jake Hunter (Matt Lawrence) and tell him he'll never be lonly again. In conclusion, I would like to admit I may watch this again, but not because I liked it.

Great movie!
tootsie4ever1223 August 2001
Great movie for the family. Starring all the Lawrence brothers, Joey, Matt and Andy. It's a great cast. All three brothers are great in the movie! It is both funny and dramatic. Joey and Matt fight most of the time but as the movie goes on they begin to settle down. All Lawrence boys are very cute! See it on Disney all the month of August!

3 Lawrences Don't Make a Right!
BHorrorWriter20 August 2001
Okay, Okay we all know that the trio of Lawrence brother's are a site to behold. They are all attractive, and talented to one degree or another. It is refreshing to see them not cast as brothers. But, this movie was not a very good offering from the Disney Channel. Over the top sensationalism. The though of Australian pirates, and asian guy with an Austrailian accent, the fake looking croc, "where did they get the spears", and cell phones would float. Okay, Okay rant over.

David Lange does a mediocre job of directing this film. It seemed at times that he was more interested in filming the brother wet and shirtless than focusing on the story. If you can call the plot a story. Luck of the Irish still reigns as my favorite Made for TV Disney Channel movie. IT was original and unique. Horse Sense, was a much better movie than this, it's sequel. It was just too far out there. I don't know..

I didn't like how the character of Michael reverted back to his snobby, bitch-boy beverly hills ways. He seemd to shed that in the first movie. Andy as Tommy gives a very flat, unworthy or the previous films character of tommy, performance. Matt Lawrence is the only one that seemed remotely interested in acting in this movie. And, that isn't saying much.

Cute movie
ziggi21128 October 2001
This movie was excellent! The storyline was original, the characters were different, and the acting was great. Seeing the Lawrence bros. together in a movie again was awesome, especially since it has been awhile. This movie made a great sequel to "Horse Sense" because it was so much different. Oh sure, Michael's still spoiled, but it still has a good lesson in it! Jumping Ship is a movie the whole family is sure to like.

Twas a good sequel.
seaquest_fan17 August 2001
I just finish seeing this an hour ago and while it is still fresh in my mind, I will review it. It was a good family film. I really did enjoy watching it and watching the Lawrence brothers acting togethor. I enjoyed the first one- Horse sense- and would have loved to see the relationship between Tommy and Mark (tommy's mom new.. um.. friend.). We went from 2 mins on the farm to 1 hours of an island. I would also for someone to explain if Michael landed in quick sand, why he did nt sink? What it was only 5 feet deep? I dont know, other than that, it was a funny and good film. Out of five stars 1 being a bomb and 5 being THE Bomb- I give it *** stars!
