On the face of it, a senior citizen encouraging other senior citizens to keep fit is an excellent idea. We should all exercise if we can, and can face it. And Sue Becker bounces about this show in great shape. So why does this show make 'tv-hell' -type shows with such regularity? Well part of it has to be Sue Becker, flinging herself about in a leotard despite being, well, old. She says, 'I will do a candle dance for you' and writhes about with lit candles and a way that might be erotic but is just uncomfortable; at other times she encourages other over-60s to do exercises to 'boomphy' music. These others tend to sit in their cardigans looking slightly embarrassed by the whole thing. And therein lies the problem - we seem to want our older people to sit about in cardigans rather than fling themselves about in leotards. We should probably be ashamed of this. Sue Becker, however, would be completely terrifying in her unstoppable, relentless enthusiasm regardless of her age. She could have done this at 20 and called it 'Scariness with Sue' and it would have been a fitter title. So it's not just ageism that's the problem. However, I have a sneaking respect for her lined face and bouncy body - perhaps we all need a bit more boomph and a bit less botox.
