- Gangaram alias Ganga (Govinda) lives a simple, straightforward life in a small village with his mom and dad (Shivaji Satham and Reema Lagoo), and his girlfriend, Saavni (Sonali Bendre) and friend Sannata (Kishore Nandlaskar). Village lout Iqbal (Nandu Madhav) has his eye on Saavni and on one occasion Ganga saves Saavni from rape from Iqbal. When the time comes for Ganga to marry, his parents inform him that his biological parents live in the city and want him to settle there. When Ganga was a kid he was diagnosed with Anaema and his biological parents Avinash (Shakti Kapoor) and Radha (Himani Shivpuri) consult a village doctor after all doctors give up hope. The village doctor advises them to put Ganga in an environment with lots of farm animals for the next 20-25 yrs to build his immunity slowly. As such, the family finds a village couple and hand over Ganga to them.. as such Ganga's father believes that the right to marry him off should reside with his birth parents. Eventually Avinash and Radha write a letter to claim Ganga back when he turns 26 yrs old.
Ganga bids tearful farewell to his village and its inhabitants (His mother had to tell him that she only reared him in exchange for money. This breaks Ganga's heart, but without this shock, he would never have left) and travels to the city of his birth parents (Ganga insists to bring Sannata along as he has nobody other than Ganga in his life). He finds that he has an elder brother Milind (Milind Gunaji), who is married to Supriya (Supriya Karnik), and younger siblings Monty, as well as his birth parents, Avinash (Shakti Kapoor) and Radha (Himani Shivpuri), who are all very wealthy. Avinash throws a party to introduce Ganga to his friends, but his lack of city manners don't go down well with anyone and Avinash has no option but to send Ganga back home. But Ganga regales the party with a song. Tina brings Ganga to her college band and helps them win a music competition. Tina takes Ganga to her house, there he finds Milind spending time with another woman. Ganga confronts Milind at home, but he swears he is not cheating on Supriya, so Ganga backtracks.
Soon word spreads about Ganga being the latest eligible bachelor. He is asked to marry a socialite, Tina (Rinke Khanna), as per his parents' wishes (even though Ganga says that he loves Saavni). Ganga agrees to everything his new-found family wants him to do as they say that they have already given their word to the bride's parents. At the engagement Saavni comes, but she tells Ganga that she is now engaged to Iqbal and is getting married next month. But Sannata knows the truth. Things get so bad for Ganga (when Supriya hits Ganga in front of her friends for defending Radha) that he runs away from his biological parents' home and finds Milind being blackmailed by a woman (his mistress) and her brother who are asking for rs 50 Lakhs for not revealing his infidelity. He saves his brother, but his best friend Sannata gets stabbed in the stomach by one of the goons who flees the scene. Ganga gets accused for stabbing his own friend & is jailed, and Supriya forbids the house from helping him in anyway. Milind also keeps his mouth shut, but later tells the truth to Supriya.
Ganga refuses to speak the truth about the incident at court as he does not want his family's reputation to be ruined. Supriya, who learns the truth from her husband, speaks out at court and proves his innocence. With a heavy heart Avinash and Radha let Ganga return to his village to his family. After the verdict, Ganga and his best friend return to their village where he reunites with Saavni. His parents agree to get them married.
