Charming Biopic on a Canadian Composer
stevergy200017 July 2021
This is lovely, sympathetic and charming portrait of Canadian composer, teacher, choir leader and organist Healey Willan. Made by the National Film Board in 1959, it depicts a typical day in the life of this elderly immigrant from England, who worked as a church organist for almost forty years at the same Anglican church in Toronto. He tries out a new composition on his organ, leads a choir in a rehearsal, visits a former student during one of his music classes at the university of Toronto, plays an engaging piece by Bach and returns home to his so-called 'junk room' where he does his composing. Over three hundred works including symphonies and operas were produced from his musical imagination, but he cherished most those pieces written for his beloved organ and church choir. A beautiful film about a wonderful man.
