Liebesman eyes 'Immortals' helm for Uni, Kirchner
Jonathan Liebesman is in negotiations to direct Universal Pictures' The Immortals for producer David Kirschner. The project will mark Liebesman's follow-up to Revolution Studios' upcoming Darkness Falls (aka Tooth Fairy), his feature directorial debut. Immortals tells the story of four twentysomething friends who are presented with the opportunity to become immortal but must first choose someone to die in their place. Universal bought the project in a pre-emptive bid 2 1/2 years ago from first-time scribes Michael Jonascu and Justin Stanley (HR 4/7/00). Carter Blanchard has since rewritten the material. Universal production president Mary Parent and vp production Tim O'Hair are overseeing Immortals. Liebesman, a South African and graduate of New York University, made his directorial debut with the short film Genesis and Catastrophe, which he also wrote and produced. The film won several awards, including a Hollywood Young Filmmaker Award at the Hollywood Film Festival in 2000. He is repped by Endeavor, Current Entertainment's David Gardner and attorney Karl Austen.
