The Band started as the Hawks, a backing band for Toronto rockabilly artist Ronnie Hawkins. After splitting from Hawkins, they performed as the Levon Helm Sextet, but then became Bob Dylan's backing band. After touring and recording with Dylan for three years, they finally recorded their first album.
Their self-titled second album, The Band, was recorded at a home in the Hollywood Hills owned by Sammy Davis, Jr. and previously owned by Judy Garland.
