Synopsis

  • An unemployed graduate (Kamal Haasan) living in a ramshackle lodge called Anand Bhavan dreams of riches. The film shows day to day life at the lodge, with a sexy maid with tight clothes, the morning toilet routine struggles. He is looking for jobs.. Doesnt have enough money for tea or even laundry (only washes the armpits). His misery is complete when he tries to show off to a beggar (P. L. Narayana) only to realize that the beggar is very rich. His room is next to a very noisy theatre, which works night shows.. While in a shop, he meets a girl (Amala) trying on earrings, and sees her again when he appears for a vacancy (he was sitting on a Mercedes, and it seemed like he owned it). One day, the graduate finds a drunk millionaire (Samir Khakhar) unconscious by the roadside. On finding the key to a suite in a plush five-star hotel named "Pushpak" in his pocket, the graduate carries the millionaire to his room at Anand Bhavan (he carefully plans everything so that his maid or none of the nosy neighbors can suspect anything), keeps him prisoner there with the help of forced doses of alcohol (which he finds in the drunk millionaire's hotel room), then moves to the millionaire's suite at Pushpak to take over his lifestyle. The graduate enjoys the high life and goes through all the luxury possessions of the drunk millionaire. He also finds a bag full of money. He buys new clothes. He takes the full wad of notes to the beggar and again shows off to him that he is indeed a rich man.

Everyday he goes back to his lodge and gives the drunk millionaire an enema and feeds him (& gives him alcohol). He packs the feces in a gift box and drops it at a random bus stand while coming back. He cant sleep in the quiet hotel room and records the noise of the theatre and plays it in his room, to sleep blissfully.

The millionaire's wife (Ramya) has a secret lover (Pratap Potan), who hires a hit-man to kill the millionaire without her knowledge. The hit-man (Tinu Anand), who has never seen the millionaire, believes the graduate is his target, based on the suite where he stays. The graduate learns that the girl is at the same hotel (they play dumb charades from their balconies and the graduate reveals that his mom died and dad ran away when he was young), and is the daughter of a magician (K. S. Ramesh). She slaps him after mistaking him for pulling a prank on her (he was trying to get close to her so they could talk. A kid put ice cubes down her dress and she thought our hero did it), but after the hotel owner suddenly dies, the two meet while paying tribute at his funeral and mend ways (she eventually finds that the kid did the prank). They gradually get into a romantic relationship.

All the while, the hit-man tries to kill the graduate with ice daggers, but fails on every attempt. The graduate remains unaware about the threat to his life. Eventually he realizes that the hit-man is in the hotel to kill someone (while sneaking out of the girl's room, he happens to go by the hit-man's window and sees him creating his weapons of ice), but cannot find the identity of his target. Later the hit-man intrudes into his suite and gets electrocuted while trying to stab the graduate from behind, but survives. Followed by the graduate, the hit-man returns to the lover's bungalow and informs him about his failure. The graduate learns the complete truth. The hit-man realizes he was targeting the wrong man all along. At this time, the millionaire's wife learns of her lover's treachery and breaks up with him.

In a montage shown about the hotel owner (Loknath), the graduate realizes that he was a poor man, just like him. Seeing what the hotel owner achieved by fair means, the graduate begins to question his actions. Some time later, he sees the roadside beggar dead and municipality people coming to take his cadaver. However, seeing the beggar's stash, they abandon his body and start taking the money. The graduate decides to make things right. He sets the millionaire free and explains the situation to him in a letter. The millionaire and his wife reunite and he stops drinking.

The graduate decides to come clean to the magician's daughter too. He learns that the magician and his family are about to leave Pushpak. The graduate confesses the truth to the magician's daughter, but to his surprise she forgives him. While leaving Pushpak, she writes something on a paper and drops a rose wrapped in the same paper from her car for the graduate to pick up. The graduate obtains the rose, but before he can obtain the paper, a gust of wind rolls it into a gutter. Some time later, the graduate is shown standing in a long queue of job seekers.
