A romantically inclined couple decide to get to know each other through letters without disclosing their identities.

Esha and Rahul start a letter based friendship that blossoms into love. They don't exchange names or pictures. Her parents would like Esha to marry Akshay who's eager to tie the knot, so Esha is forced to make a decision...—Anonymous

Romantic Esha calls up FM Radio's DJ Bingo to find out the identity of a male who had called during his program. While Bingo is unable to identify him, the male, Rahul Sharma, does call again, and a meeting is arranged. Esha does not show up, but instead decides to correspond with him via a post box numbered address without disclosing her name, to which Rahul agrees, arranges for a numbered postal address himself, and does not disclose his identity as well. Rahul has a friend, Akshaye, who is a womanizer, whose mother asks Rahul to check out a bride for her son. Rahul goes to check this young lady, Esha Malhotra, finds her suitable, and soon marriage preparations are underway. Rahul's romance for the unknown girl will be shattered after he finds out that she is none other than Esha.—rAjOo (gunwanti@hotmail.com)

Esha Malhotra (Esha Deol) is a bright, spirited girl who has just left college. Best friend Riya (Shilarna Vaze) & Maya (Rati Agnihotri), her Bua. Mother Mrs. Inder Malhotra (Moushumi Chatterjee) & dad Inder Malhotra

Esha finds a note from a past student of her school that coincides with her own feelings of love. She calls into a radio station and requests a song, repeating the words left on the note ("Kya Yahi Pyaar Hai"). An anonymous man calls in soon after, stating that he is the one who had written the letter and he would like to meet her someday since they seem to have the same feelings about love and other aspects in life. The radio announcer sets up a date and time for their meeting at the radio station.

The man arrives but finds only a letter waiting for him. The letter does not state her name or address, only a post box number to which she requests him to write so that they can be friends. The correspondence begins. The man turns out to be a photographer and commercial pilot Rahul Sharma (Hrithik Roshan). They do not meet, exchange numbers, or tell their names but continue to write to each other. The dude is a dreamer, and the girl is a student still and wants to have full faith in the due, before she introduces him to her parents. Through the letters both figure out that they are both like each other in almost every way.

Fate brings the two together when Esha hires Rahul to be their photographer for a campaign. Of course, she didn't know it was him nor he did that it was her. Rahul travels to Dehradun for the campaign and meets Esha for the first time. They spend time with each other as Esha also invites Rahul to her college annual event. Esha gets drunk when her guy friends mix tequila in her drinks. Rahul saves her the embarrassment by dancing with her the entire night. Esha even models for Rahul in the bridal dresses, which is the theme for the campaign. Esha was also shooting a promotional music video, but the shoot is in jeopardy when the actor and actress refuse to show up (as they have better offers in hand). The director ropes in Rahul and Esha to substitute for them.

Akshay is a flirt and womanizer who also happens to be Rahul's best friend. He lives with dad Roshan (Anang Desai) and mom (Smita Jaykar). They wanted Akshay to marry Tanya (Ashima Bhalla). Tanya is the daughter of their best friends. Akshay had slept with Tanya as a casual affair, but now when Tanya has proposed a wedding via her parents, he tries to talk his way out by saying that his mom is evil and dad will ask for a huge dowry. Tanya sees through the lie and leaves with her parents.

Esha's grandfather Sanjay Malhotra (Alok Nath) wants her to get married and thus he arranges for her to meet Akshay Kapoor (Saif Ali Khan). Akshay is the son of Maya's friend. Esha has fallen in love with her pen pal and does not want to marry Akshay. However, Esha can't say anything to Sanjay as she has no clue who her pen pal is. Esha goes to Rahul for help but figures out that Rahul came to Dehradun to see Esha as a prospective bride for Akshay. Esha feels betrayed. It is revealed that the same day Esha called Rahul for the campaign, her grandfather approached Akshay's parents for the match. Akshay then convinced Rahul to go for the campaign and assess Esha as his bride.

Akshay meets Esha formally and instantly falls in love. He tells the same to Rahul and says he will leave his flirty ways for Esha.

Esha writes to her pen pal and asks him to meet her at a designated place at a designated time to meet her grandfather. But Rahul was not in Mumbai and never got the letter and hence didn't show up for the meeting. Esha now has no option but to agree to marry Akshay. A love-struck Rahul is eager to meet the one to whom he writes letters. He writes to Esha calling her for a meeting as a place, on a day which was incidentally her engagement day. Much to his shock though, he finds out it is Esha. Because of his friendship with Akshay, who is now deeply in love with Esha, Rahul decides to forget her. Rahul backs away and never meets Esha and hence Esha doesn't know that her pen pal is Rahul. Esha, unable to contact her anonymous love, agrees to wed Akshay.

As they plow through their engagement, Esha realizes she has nothing in common with Akshay. He is non-veg; she is vegetarian. He likes looks; she is more into content. He gets her a really revealing dress for a family party, which she is very uncomfortable to wear.

Esha tells Akshay that she can't marry him, but Akshay says that he won't back away from the marriage as he believes Esha has been defrauded and there is no such guy. Akshay convinces Rahul to become the mystery guy, and call Esha and tell her that there is nothing between them. Rahul does this also for Akshay. Rahul leaves for Vancouver the day before the wedding, vowing never to be seen again.

Four years later, in a mall in Canada, Rahul meets Akshay, who now has a son. Rahul thinks he is about to meet Esha but instead meets Akshay's former girlfriend Tanya, who is now his wife. Akshay explains that he could not marry Esha in the end because she still loves her mystery writer. Suddenly, a group of workers in the mall carry in a large portrait of Esha, and Akshay realizes that Rahul is the mystery writer Esha fell in love with. He urges Rahul to hurry back to India. Rahul does so and reunites with Esha.
