Terrible Attempt At Comedy
Theo Robertson17 December 2002
It was Jon Pertwee who said " It`s very difficult to be funny but very easy to be silly " . Well if that`s the case PASTY FACES is " Very easy " . David Baker ( As Director /Screenwriter ) and his cast seem to be under the impression that comedy involves stealing scenes and style from superior Britcoms like LOCK STOCK.. and TRAINSPOTTING , using a completely underdeveloped script and jumping up and down speaking in a very fast voice very loudly . Alan McCaffrey especially suffers from this type of OTT performance but not enough to ruin the film because there`s not enough of a film to ruin .

PASTY FACES is terrible on all fronts especially scriptwise . I couldn`t understand why it ended the way it did , it just seemed to stop in a very abrupt and silly manner . Oh and other glaring errors are that you need a visa to visit the USA and a green card in order to work there - This film would have you believe you can get off a plane and start a new life in America without any authorisation - that you still get paid to donate blood in America - People who I know in America , and who donate blood tell me payment for donations stopped several years ago - and that you can buy any type of weapon from a gun shop . As far as I know gun laws in America differ from state to state but no gun shops sell anti tank guns over the counter . So we`ve got a very erroneous view of America from a very unreal and oh so unfunny film . Maybe this is revenge for BRAVEHEART a very Hollywood view of the Scots ? Perhaps , but this doesn`t stop PASTY FACES from being a crap comedy

Very funny film

I had no idea what this would be like, but there was a lot of copies and a lot of people were picking it up, so I did too. It was a low budgeter, so I didn't expect much, but I have to admit I laughed my leg off all the way through.

I don't know if I would have went to see it in the cinema, but it was well worth the hire on dvd. I would recommend it if you just want a laugh and don't care about the lack of names.

dreadful

I shall refrain from speculation on who gave this roadkill a good review, or what their motives were for doing so.

I will say that I am completely baffled as to how anyone could think this dross is a good film.

It is not a failure because of the miniscule budget. Other micro budget films have been entertaining. It is a failure because it has literally nothing to recommend it.

A meandering, idiotic, dull script plods along without ever reaching the dizzying heights of banal. The lead characters are irritating ( one is particularly so).

The fact that they are brought to life by a selection of underwhelming actors doesn't help. Also, the fact that the "writer" created this script as a starring vehicle for himself is seldom a good sign.

I understand that everyone has different tastes but it is virtually impossible to praise any aspect of this production.

A Gem...

This movie completely passed me by. Missed it at the cinema and knew nothing of it until I happened upon it in the local video shop.

The funniest film I've seen for a long time... Although, judging by the votes - not to everyones taste! An admittedly slow middle section does drag the film down a little but overall it's a very enjoyable experience.

Funny little caper
freedomfilm24 January 2003
Saw this on dvd recently.

Some people on here seem to take it serious, pointing out errors about getting visas and such, very stupid, as this little film is just pure pulp entertainment that does not take itself serious. It is almost like a cartoon with swear words, so I just wanted to clear that up.

I have to agree that the script was underdeveloped, a common thing with most films in the uk because of the lack of money, but for what it was I had a laugh. Compared to most hollywood comedies, it had a low budget rawness that I liked.

It definately suffered because of the budget, there is no question of that, but I thought all the cast were great, and I loved the bus scenes. On a whole, it was a little caper about a couple of out of luck dreamers who head for the west coast, and things don't turn out as planned.

I would give it a seven out of ten, taking into consideration it was a low budget movie with no names. Thiink the director is one to watch for in future, in Hollywood entertaining films, not Brit films.

Fairly enjoyable
Leepollard26 December 2001
I saw this film in Glasgow earlier this year. I knew by stories I heard it was not some slick big budget flick, which is really why I went because I am sick of supporting big budget films that all have the same formula.

It was not a great film, but it definately had the potential there to be a hit, the thing that stopped it I think was the budget, as I heard it was made for like a quarter of a million, so taking that into consideration it was ok. I have to admit the cinema was packed when I saw it and people laughed a lot because there was some very funny scenes. The cast on a whole were also good, especially the guy that plays Joe.

I have to say on a whole though that it seemed like a film that was wasted because of the lack of budget. I think if it had a budget it could been just as big as "Road Trip", and funnier. It was refreshing coming out of Scotland as all we get here is drunks and social deprivation, so I will give it the thumbs up for that alone. I have seen many bad films, but most of them don't have the excuse that they don't have a budget or stars, so I can't criticise this harshly.

This is a FUNNY film.

The other Glasgow guy who commented negatively about this film has absolutely zero sense of humour. This is an excellent, inspired, hilarious low budget film set in Glasgow,Los Angeles and Las Vegas. The guy who starred in/wrote and directed this fun fest should have a big future in film although his co-star( a very funny comedy actor) steals the film with his love of American Mafia films and impersonations of Al Pacino.Cora Bissett and Chloe Annett are funny, dangerous and sexy.Three of the things I love in my female stars.Looking forward to the next one by this team.11 out of 10!

Worth Watching
martin-4758 December 2003
Some Comments on this film are very harsh and would agree with other viewer personal. I watched the film on a Saturday night, not expecting much, but what a laugh. The best Scottish film in years. Need much more. As for comments re: acting.I thought they were great. The big guy from the porridge ad just signed a deal worth $1m and Pasty Faces just got a U.S distribution. Big Money if i'm not wrong. The wee guy who plays Joe is never off the tele. So i Think the film and the cast were excellent. Well worth watching.

HAHAHA!

I am a sucker for shiny colorful covers and pitches, so that's what made me rent this in Blockbuster, as there is nobody in it I recognise.

It wasn't a great film, but I contradict myself with saying that because I have watched it four times!! So it has something. I think it is the great characters, as the plot is very simple. Bunch of losers and dreamers out of their territory head for Vegas.

I loved some of the lines. Main prankster gets his finger stuck in a shotgun in a Vegas hotel while preparing for a heist, " I can't take you to a hospital with a shotgun stuck to your finger!"

They also have a sloth who lies in their bus all day, but decides he needs a change, so he wants to get off before Vegas "Every time anybody has a problem they either sing about it like the kids from fame, or everybody heads for Vegas! F**k Vegas!, I am out of here to be with nature"

The film is full of great little bits like this, but as I keep saying it is not a great film, but I now own the dvd! hahaha.

To sum up. A simple little low budget film, but unlike a lot of big films, you could find yourself watching it again and again and not be bored.

PS. Guy who plays Joe will be a star one day

GREAT COMEDY!
zigzag5782 July 2003
I was recommended to see this by a friend who had it on dvd. I am not a huge fan of Brit films, not since the old days of ealing anyway, but I had a look, and had a good laugh.

Woow!! Some comments are very harsh on here, and seem personal, but this is my opinion. It was a very low budget movie by the looks of it, so I suspect it was made for cents. Having no names and seeing the lack of production values indicates this, but don't let this put you off. This is a funny little gem of a movie.

Sure there is a few bad things about it, but it screams to be something else it was not. The dialouge is very well written, but I would say under developed, and the performaces are great. All played very deadpan. Little too much swearing for my liking, but on a whole I would recommed this to anybody who wants a laugh.

Look forward to the next filmmakers movie, hopefully he will have some names and a bigger budget.
