Who, What and Where?
This does not appear to be one of the faked battle scenes that Edison's people produced a lot of during the Spanish-American War -- there is a particular field in New Jersey that is supposed to have stood in for battle sites in Cuba, South Africa and wherever fighting was going on at the moment. No, this one appears to be shot on the deck of an actual battleship.
Unfortunately, the print I have seen is rather... well, blurry, and no one comes very near the camera. Instead one sees several people disembarking, and then one officer walking around. Who is it?
It might be Admiral Dewey. On the other hand, judging from the uniform, it might be an elderly telegraph delivery man.
Given that the movies were perfectly capable of shooting well-composed scenes in sharp focus in this decade -- one only has to look at the stuff that the Lumieres were turning out in this period -- this is a poor, pointless movie for the era. Perhaps a better print will show up. But even then it will likely remain a curiosity and no more.
