Truly amazing
Therod1 August 2001
Superb in every sense.

The characters (and character development) are excellent, the music is wonderfully atmospheric, and the storyline was so well-written that it grabbed you and wouldn't let you. I don't think a video game has ever actually made me emotional while playing it until "Xenogears."

I could go on but I would probably exceed the posting limit, hehe. If you can find this game anywhere - GRAB IT! And never let it go.

A masterpiece!
geckolio13 February 2001
Xenogears is probably one of the finest games I have ever played. I love RPGs with very in-depth plots, and this one certainly gives me a lot to sink my teeth into! There is a nice mix of drama, humor, and suspense in it that makes me unable to stop playing for more than a few hours. The characters are very well developed, and the battle system is perfect for me. While there are occasional holes in the plot, they really aren't big enough to make the game unenjoyable. The characters are nicely animated and the backgrounds are completely 3D. One feature in this game that is rare in RPGs is the ability to JUMP! I like that a lot.

While this game is not for everyone, and people who don't like do to a lot of reading in their video games would probably hate it, I strongly recommend it.

A true RPG masterpiece
champ7823 May 2002
I have played many RPG's and seen many amazing games in my life, but this one is one of the crown jewels that Squaresoft has bestowed upon us. The gameplay is unique and the story is very new and compelling. The music is fantastic and the length of the game rivals most of the Final Fantasy games. Bravo Squaresoft...bring us more gems like these!

Square's crowning achievement in complexity; A Masterpiece.
kilgres_bloodmoon13 June 2000
The opening of Xenogears is a lavish CGI sequence spliced with anime that begins with the famous biblical line: "I am Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last." The cryptic events of the opening scenes (the tragedy of the Eldridge, and the emergence of the woman from the wreckage on the beach) lead into events that take place nearly 10,000 years later.

Following a lengthy exposition in text, the story leads to a small village on the border of the kingdom of Aveh and the Kislev Empire (the two warring nations) named Lahan. And the tale of Fei Fong Wong begins.

The general feeling at the outset of the game is one that is familiar in the realm of RPGs: Young man with amnesia involved somehow in the fate of the world. We've seen it a thousand times. However, the gods at Square turn the tables very early in the game, adding heart-wrenching tragedy to the carefree world Fei inhabits. Very soon, the once two dimensional plot gains a considerable amount of depth. Fei begins to doubt himself and his past as more and more becomes known to him about the truth... of everything.

This game literally has everything: Great villains (Grahf, Id, Ramsus, Miang), memorable characters (Wiseman, Zephyr), a barrage of the most complex plot twists (watch out once the attack against Vanderkaum begins) known in RPG land, and quite possibly the greatest love story a video game has to offer (Fei and Elly were meant to be, and finding out why is one of the most fascinating plot points in RPG history).

True to its tagline ("Stand tall and shake the heavens"), Xenogears delivers a storyline that raises questions about existence, God, and the relevance of religious doctrine. Name-dropping like "Fatima" and "the Magi", backed by inquisition style priests named the Ethos heighten the whole experience to a new, groundbreaking level.

Solidified by a simply sublime soundtrack by Yasunori Mitsuda, Xenogears is one of the best games of all time, and it's a shame that more people don't know that.

The peak of Square's late 1990s RPGs.
stjobs24 September 2005
This is simply one of the best RPGs ever made, if not the best. The story far surpasses FFVII, FFVIII, or even Chrono Trigger. The characters are vividly detailed and believable. The dialogue can be stilted at times, but it only adds to the game's charm. The art design is fantastic, and Yasunori Mitsuda's score is beyond description.

Xenogears is a fairly challenging game even for RPG buffs; expect to attempt some major boss battles 2-3 times and trying different strategies. It's also a long game; my first playthrough was around 50 hours. I've recently started to play through it again, just to relive the experience that nearly consumed my life for a month or two in 1999.

If you somehow missed this one, buy it ASAP. It was hard to get for a while, but a Greatest Hits version was reissued a year or two ago. This is not a game - more like an experience. It probably sounds like hyperbole, but you have to play Xenogears for yourself. After the first hour or two, you won't be able to stop.

I'm not much for words...

I'm not much for words, and not here to write a review, but I must say that Xenogears is one of the best games I ever got sucked into. Xenogears took my breath away, not to mention 72+ hours of pure gaming bliss. It had a few rough spots, nothing is perfect, but overall as far as story, battle system, graphics, and music and sound effects, I have to say Xenogears is one of the best games for the Sony PlayStation, if not one of the best games in known history.

Probably my favorite video game of all time
polysicsarebest7 August 2008
It's hard to choose between this and Super Metroid as my personal favorite game of all time, but I'm probably leaning towards choosing this game because of its length and for it being one of the few games to actually make me think...

Anyway, this is a perfect game from every angle. The music, the characters, the battles, pretty much anything that you could find flaws in any other game is perfect in this game. The main selling point, of course, is the multi-layered and very convoluted storyline. Though obviously very indebted to Evangelion, the 70 hours or so of story in this game is full of plot twists and shocking revelations about humanity, existence, God, love, death, and everything else in between. Not your typical RPG fare by any stretch of the imagination.

Also, don't listen to people who say disc 2 sucks... there is more than enough gameplay in this game that disc 2 comes as somewhat of a relief after 50 or so hours of disc 1's constant battles.

Just a perfect game... what more can I say?

The Best game there is.
id2001ca20 March 2001
Xenogears would have to be the only rpg that has spunk! C`mon that game just purely rocks. The story was just amazing and not to mention that villain Id. I would have to say that id is my favorite charater in this game and the following would have to be Fei. I kinda like the idea that Citan get`s a sword later on in the game,Whoaa you should see the moves he get`s with that sword. This Rpg Would have to be my favorite for the following reasons.

1- The story has a twist. 2- The characters are sort of original 3- Well it`s the best game there is!

What i disliked about this game where the fights sometimes, There are some fights that are sort of irritating when you encounter big enemies you gotta tranfer in the gears,When you encounter small enemis you can`t get out of the gears which entirely was a waste of fuel. And another thing do not e-mail me saying "Well that`s how you level up" I know that`s how you level up! Future wise i hope they come out with another Xenogears in the future but this time i hope people will learn on how to appreciate it this time instead of running like chickens with their heads cut off trying and fighting for a copy of Xenogears. And i hope they come out with more copies of the next one instead of limited copis. Like c`mon i paid mine used 75.00$ at a video game store i asked why they told me that this game was hard to find. PIECE OF ADVICE: If you own a copy of that Game KEEP IT. They are going for 75.00$ used just think of how much it will be worth later on in the future.

One big awesome story...
pawned798 November 2002
Xenogears is a must have. Unfortunately, it is difficult to find. The graphics are not good, the sound is not good, the control doesn't matter, the music is excellent, but the story-- the story is one of the best sci-fi fantasy stories I've ever seen in a video game. Like many great unfolding stories, the plot might be very bury at the beginning. To describe everything in one word without spoiling: `coincidence.' A must have RPG.

Greatest RPG ever created
pmcollectorboy26 September 2000
This is a fantastic role playing game, one that grabs you with its story and doesn't let go. This isn't just a simple, one level plot like in Final Fantasy VII. This has many layers of depth, and it sometimes gets convoluted. It's about religion. It's about one man's quest to find his past. It's about true love. It's about government conspiracies. It's about a mysterious evil. It's about genetic experiments. It's about GIANT MACHINES! The magic system is weak, but the fighting system more than makes up for it. It kicks butt! This game is also long and difficult, longer and more difficult than Final Fantasy VII. I find this more satisfying. Don't let anybody tell you this game is overrated, too huge, or too complicated. This game is really beefy and requires a certain mindset. Maybe not everybody will have that mindset, but play it and judge for yourself. And if anybody is wondering why this looks like a ripoff of Neon Genesis Evangelion, it's not. The writers of Neon Genesis helped create the story for Xenogears.

A very fine role playing game, its only flaw being second disc issues
Aaron13753 June 2007
This game for the most part is excellent. Its story hooks you right from the get go and the combat is rather varied for a turn based rpg. Great characters and great story too. The combat is turn based, however for some of the fights you will fight using the characters themselves and you push the buttons in certain order to perform super attacks that you can chain together for deadly result. The other fighting involves mech warriors the characters pilot called gears, and while the fighting doesn't have quite the combos in this form you do get to do very devastating attacks to your opponent. The game features cut scenes ala final fantasy, however, with the exception of the first one most are done in an anime style. The story follows a young man whose tiny town is invaded by warring nations and who becomes involved with a rebel group to take back one of the countries at war. However, not all is as it seems as secrets are learned and outside forces trying to help one country over the other have appeared. There are a lot of mystery's to unravel, a super powered villain out to destroy seemingly everything, and people with differing motives to be found. Yes, this game would nearly be perfect until the start of the second disc and from here on out the game seems a tad rushed as you basically get told what is happening without any involvement in some areas and you must fight a little in others. I am guessing the makers of this game were pushed into releasing the game a bit faster than they wanted. Still after awhile you take control of the game again and it once again becomes very good, just a shame that this one section of the story had to unfold the way it did.

Great for the Hardcore RPGamer
cdtressler28 March 2002
A great epic and highly recommended for RPG fans. An awe inspiring and wonderfully complex story. The massive amount of text become rather tiring near the end, especially the part where Fei sits in his rocking chair while he dictates the story at half hour intervals with the only control of the character being returned to the player by a boss battle after which they are returned to Fei in his Chair, talking for another half hour. However flawed, it should still be considered a masterpiece of storyline and should be at least taken under consideration by gamers to add to their collection.

Almost Perfect, but the best plot game ever seen, and very educational if you study psychology or like Star Trek
ichiroide29 August 2015
Everything was almost perfect, the plot is based on many books(Nietzsche, Freud, Lacan, Karen Honey, etc) and movies(Soylent Green, Star Trek, Star Wars, etc), just game play was slow.

Xenogears, is considered one of the best rpg ever created just because of its plot, is a revolutionary one based on Soylent Green where humans were transform to food, also on Many religions on Earth, Buddhism(reincarnation), Induism(alien-gods)and Judaism(Zohar, Elul, etc).

Also there are sci-fi content based on Isaac Asimov, Dune, Star Trek, Star Wars, just remember that the planet you are playing is not Earth.

Really Good, but Not at the Top of My List
Joe S.27 February 2002
Warning: Spoilers
*SPOILER NOTICE*

I just want to say that all though I will sound highly critical, I did enjoy this game. The main story was amazing how it took so many elements that seemed like simple piling on and brought them all together very well. However, many many people have praised this endlessly and I just can't say this has been the great experience that many others have had.

My biggest problem comes with some things the designers did to make the game "bigger" outside of the story line. Sure, people can give estimates anywhere from 50-100 hours of gameplay, but in many ways, that means little if they're not quality hours. Just because a movie's three hours doesn't immediately make it a masterpiece. Do I need to bring Pearl Harbor into this? There are many things that could've been cut straight out of the game without anyone missing anything. The biggest example is the time spent in Kislev. There's more than eight hours spent in an area made up of mostly browns and boringness. Eight hours. That's a full day's work spent just to get one character in your party and to establish another. And spending at least a fourth of that time in a sewer is just too much (sewers have to be the absolute worst places to be installed into RPGs since they overdid the 3-D areas in the late 80s and early 90s). Plus, there are times when they are about to reveal key secrets to the game and they pull the "But first.... HERE'S THE MOST COMPLICATED PLACE KNOWN TO MAN WITH THE HARDEST ENEMIES YOU'LL FIND!" Krelian's lab and the final area of the game are good examples. I know it's a game and challenge is required, but come on, there's a point between anxious anticipation and aggrivation that this game crossed a few times with me. And the constant fights don't help either. I don't care what battle system you have. They get irritating after a long time (except for FF Tactics, because battles were the whole point!) As for the religious references, for the record I am a Christian, but since a lot of games have the "conquering of God" theme (there's a well-known series of game whose recent entry follows along the same lines, but that's all I'll say about that). For the most part, I'm OK with with it, but there are times when they grow too much of an ego. I don't know if it's just one of many translational problems this game had or what, but I hate it when they highlight some of the references like they do with *ABEL*. It's like they're saying, "Look, we made a Biblical reference! Aren't we the most brilliant people on Earth!" Modesty, ladies and gentlemen. Modesty. Also, I didn't appreciate the scene where they crucified some characters for no apparent reason! Now, maybe I missed something, but just sending people to the cross without the slightest idea of how that fits into the mythology of the game is just wrong! I mean, it's going fine with high-brow criticism and then it brings something which is offensive and worse, offesnsive without any reason to be! If it was a full-blown allegory, I'd understand, but it isn't. It makes religious references and makes some characters like character from different religions, but they aren't full-blown depictions.

I personally prefer Breath fo Fire II's criticism where it has a monster that creates a Christian-like religion and uses the prayers of people to drain their energy and their souls. It shocks into realizing that most people are using tools of prayer for personal greed and that simply makes us empty, and that sets in. I'm just lukewarm to this one, simply because it sometimes acts as self-rightious as the people they're attacking. And they perhaps add too much fantasy aspects that it distances itself from the things it criticizes. The Catholic Church has been accused of a lot of things, but I don't think it ever did human experimentation, turning people into blood-sucking zombies. In my mind, that's probably the LAST thing they'd do, judging from their stance on stem-cell research and the like, but hey, maybe it's a metaphor.

As for other parts of the game, I used to dislike the music, but it's grown on me. The main reason I didn't like it is that they overuse and overuse certain tracks until you'd rather put a gun to your head than listen to it again (ex. Yggdrasil and Aveh's theme). I mean Mitsuda's work is wonderful, but I don't think it's right for the repeatitive listening game music requires. Chrono Chross is a much better use of Mitsuda's work as game music even though the game is inferior. The anime cut scenes aside from the opener don't add much. There are times when I wondered why they put one in at all. Also the inclusion of CG isn't all that seamless. Sometimes, it looks like they're mixing Reboot with a comic book. For an example of this done people, try the Lunar Complete series for the PSX. While Xenogears may have been rushed and the Lunar games were given plenty of production times, still, we have to judge the finished project as the finished project. As for the regular graphics, the graphics sometimes make it hard to tell where people are and sometimes WHO people are. Also, sometimes it leaves you somewhere without a goal and you must spend at least an hour rummaging around listening to the same villagers and their dry, commoner dialogue to figure where to go and what to do (Aveh again). Plus, the translation problems make some odd conspiracy theories. In reading some internet articles regarding the referencees made, many of them said that some harsh religious references existed but were less noticable because of misspellings. Now, I'm sure it's probably a case of mistaking some letters, and with working with such a massive work, it's hard to check. However, some people who are finger-pointing censorphobes may beg to differ. It would've been better to get it right. Overall, the game is really good as far as plot goes. However, the framing of it is something that at times, makes it difficult for me to be gripped into the game. But there's very little I'm truly angry at. In fact, the only thing I'm angry at is that they blatently ripped off the movie Soylent Green and don't fess up. Instead, they integrate it completely in like there's nothing wrong. And it distracts those who get the reference too. I was yanked clean out of the game by the roots because of it. However, for most of you who weren't even born when Soylent Green came out, there should be no problem. In the end, I'm glad I own it, but, as an avid Opera buffo, there's no topping FF VI in my mind.

6.7????
racs-lifehouse25 May 2013
I can't believe that this game just has a 6.7 rating here! Come to think of it, this isn't even really a gaming review site or anything so people don't know what they're talking about. GameSpot gave it a 9.5, which I think is really deserving because it really is one of the best games out there to date. The soundtrack is amazing too.

I first played this when I was 10 years old. I stopped halfway because not only was the story confusing to me (ofcourse at such a young age) but I just rushed through the game not leveling up so boss battles were really hard. But the thought of the game stuck with me for years and I yearned to play it for so long so when I turned 18, I finally played it and wow, I can't believe how amazing and complex the story is. Very top notch and unlike any other. It brought tears to my eyes when I finished the game, just pure nostalgia.

My advice is to take time to level up your characters. Boss battles are pretty difficult. Also, don't be too thrifty, you need to spend especially for your gears. And! keep an eye out for special items or places because there are tons of it.

Again, this game deserves a rating higher than the measly 6.7 its given here. That's bull.

Great story,bad gameplay.
Solid Eagle12 April 2002
Xenogears have one of the most complex and greatest stories i had ever seen in a videogame, movie, comic, etc,BUT it also have a very bad and frustrating gameplay.

One thing i don´t understand is why you have to watch Fei and Elly on a chair narrating almost 2 hours of the story instead of making you to play those paras that they are narrating.Makes me think that when Square was making the game they were tire of so many nonsense random battles and they decided to put those narrating segments instead of figthing scenes so the programmers and the battle planers could take a break.

The music is superb,it could be repetitive sometimes but it has beautiful songs like "The Begining and the end",and so many others,Yasunori Mitsuda prooves again his talent as a composer.

Sure the story has it´s flaws and holes but, which story doesn´t have it?,until date i hadn´t know of any RPG that had a "perfect" story,"perfect" gameplay or "perfect" characters.

In a nutshell,Xenogears is a must have game, but lemme give you a good advice, don´t try to end it in a few days, give some breaks when you play it so that way you wont feel annoyed by the battles or other details of the gameplay.

Play "Valkyrie Profile" instead.
Mitora-san12 January 2002
Okay, okay, so I have heard that "Xenogears" is the best thing since making sliced bread into toast. But in my opinion, the game made me feel rather empty. Seems more like movie than video game.

''The greatest story in the history of gaming.''

*snicker* Yeah, what an absolutely amazing story. It was so amazingly gripping that I stopped paying attention to it not to far into the game. Hell, I really didn't even notice much of a story. Some will lambast me for that, saying that I have no reason to speak badly of the game because I didn't see the game through to the end, where the story really picks up. That's bull. If an RPG doesn't have a story that at least mildly grabs your attention by the 10th hour, it's doubtful the story will suddenly become a fantastic epic within a few hours. The story begins with your main character, Fei, in the town of Lahan. Ummmm... after about an hour of mind-numbing talking, some Gears (Gears being big robots, one of the only cool things in this entire game) come and trash the town. Wow. Fei gets in a Gear and kicks some ass though. The story is basically a mindless jumble after that, not really even existing for awhile. The story literally seems to disappear. That's one of the main problems in Xenogears. The mind-numbing drudge called the story. The fantastically dull writing doesn't help either. I can remember nary a line from the whole game, it was that forgettable. All the characters' seem to speak the same, in the same manner, and everything is just dull. You certainly won't be smiling in this game, thanks to the crap dialogue and sleep-inducing 'story'.

The characters seem to be drabbed and poorly designed, I mean, look at the HUMAN character designs. The look like people with bunny rabbit faces in need of plastic surgery on their nose! Geez, you wish Square Soft did not throw out there more talented members. PAINFUL!

And the religious and mythological overtones, pah, ANY RPG has religious or mythological overtones! Except, with Xenogears, it's not very interesting, instead, everything seems to be rather fake and melodramatic.

And geez, gameplay would have helped alot. Not much of it and all you get to do is pound on your controller buttons, nothing like "Star Ocean" or "Valkyrie Profile"!

Overall, like I said, if you want a GOOD mythological related game, play "Valkyrie Profile". Though the story is simple and precise and some characters (I DO ADMIT) get more attention than others, but the saving grace were the soundtrack and GAMEPLAY, what Xenogears was MISSING.

Oh, I had enough, just hope XENOSAGA is better......

Too overrated!
Chibi Riza2 September 2000
Wow,I found yet another over-rated RPG on the PSX. "Xenogears" has to be an insult to Square Soft here.

No,I do not hate it for Religious overtones. In fact,I constantly play "Rudora no Hihou"/"Rudra's Treasure" and that has TONS of Religious and Mystical over-tones (mostly of Asian folklore and Sufism). But the reasons are is that the storyline is basically Neon Genesis Evangelion meets Macross on fire control(plus a few deleted sex scenes), the characters all have big noses and the quotes are basically "Noooooooo","What happened?","What the hell is this thing?" or "WATCH OUT!". Plus, you can barely play the game at all(mostly Anime FMVS)and when it becomes playable,it's all f**ked up and hard to control!

Here are some RPGs I recommend:

"Seiken Densetsu 3":Wonderfull dark, yet cute storyline, neato class change options, plot twists galore, plus, whatever characters you choose, the storyline will change.

"Rudora no Hihou"/"Rudra's Treasure":Very ORIGINAL RPG by Keita Amemiya of "Zeiram" and "Moon of Tao" fame.Enuff said!

"Final Fantasy VII":A well done storyline PLUS some actually cool villains! This was also one of the few good RPGs by Square now-a-days!

Illusion of Time and Terranigma:One of the better non-Square games I've played. Each have unique features,PLAYABILITY and plus, there were FEMALE animators involved in these games (which I don't really know of in alot of RPGs).
