Leon the cheat...once again!
planktonrules8 May 2020
For nearly twenty years, Leon Errol made a long string of comedy shorts for RKO. In most, he played the same sort of guy...a bit of a scoundrel and playboy who is married to a bit of a harpy...most often played by Dorothy Granger. Here, we have a pretty typical outing...which isn't bad at all.

The story begins with Leon and a friend out at a nightclub. It seems that instead of going fishing, like Leon told his wife he was going to do, he and his buddy are out partying. Unfortunately, Leon's wife (Granger) arrives at the club and spots Leon. Here is where the two guys quickly formulate a stupid plan...that Leon has amnesia! Surprisingly, the wife seems to believe this...but when she calls the doctor, he arrives and quickly determines Leon is a liar. So, to teach him a lesson, they formulate a plan of their own.

This story is cute and enjoyable. Like nearly all of Errol's films, it is enjoyable but not a laugh riot either....just a competently made comedy short that provides a few laughs.

More silliness from the rascally Leon.

Warning: Spoilers
Caught in the act of lying when he turns up in a restaurant, caught by his wife while she believes he's fishing, Leon Errol claims to have amnesia. Of course his wife knows she's lying and sets out to teach him a lesson with the help of psychiatrist Byron Foulger and his gorgeous nurse Patti Brill who claims to be Errol's other wife. It's silly sitcom stuff that Errol and Edgar Kennedy did over and over throughout the 1940's in these RKO shorts, some better than others. Unlike Kennedy, Errol was a lead in films while Kennedy played mainly amusing bits. This is enjoyable but quickly forgettable fluff, although the finale is genius.

Amnesia, Bigamy, Murder, What's The Difference?

Leon Errol told wife Dorothy Granger that he and Harry Harvey were going fishing. Instead they went to a party. When they run into Dorothy in a nightclub, Leon pretends to have amnesia.

It's one of the standard but well executed shorts that Errol appeared in during his long tenure at RKO from 1933 through his death in 1951, often with Miss Granger playing his wife. It starts out with a single, selfish lie on Errol's part, and by the end has escalated into bigamy and murder, all to be settled by Dorothy smashing a plate over his head.

The comedy is all about Leon, of course, with his stuttering and stammering and double takes. He also does a bit of his "rubber legs" dancing, which had made him a Ziegfeld star.
