I'm very surprised that the Dominican Republic, a country with practically no film background (so far its most popular film is the mediocre and overrated Nueva Yol) can pull off a compelling movie such as El Circulo Vicioso. The film covers the Dominican underworld in the areas of Washington Heights and the Bronx with an accuracy never seen before. The main character, Mellizo, finds a new rival in his friend Ingeniero who steals his girlfriend and also tries to steal his business. With the raw power of any good gangster film, we are immersed in their world of betrayal and payback. A great first movie for this talented group of people and I hope is not its last.
