Plot

The Christmas Angel

Summaries

  • A family has a sick woman at home. Her girl goes out in the snow to beg.

Synopsis

  • The film opens in the home of an impoverished family. The mother is sick in bed, and the father has no money left to cover expenses. He sends his young daughter out to beg. There is winter weather outside, and the streets are covered in snow.

The daughter heads to a church, where a group of professional beggars are waiting for charity. When the girl tries to join them, the beggars chase her away from the door. Well dressed churchgoers soon exit the building, with some of them offering charity. Most of the churchgoers ignore the begging girl, though a few of them actively try to reject her approach. The final man to exit the church angrily shoves the girl away from him. Discouraged, the girl leaves empty-handed.

The scene changes to a restaurant, where the staff prepare meals for affluent customers. The girl enters and begs the staff members for money. They quickly throw her out. Passing police officers escort the girl away from the restaurant's door. The head cook then kicks a slacking employee.

Out on the street, the beggar girl is ignored by a well-dressed couple. She lies down on the street, and falls asleep on the snow. A rag-and-bone man appears, collecting street trash. He stumbles on the girl's inert body. He wakes her up, and takes pity on her. He offers her a meager meal, and then covers her in his shawl. He then sends her on her way, and heads towards the opposite direction.

A snowstorm takes place, and the girl collapses on the street. An automobile approaches and the driver notices the girl. He stops for her. He and his female passenger transport the girl to their automobile. The scene shifts to the girl's home, where her parents seem worried because she has failed to return.

The father eventually gets down on his knee and prays to the heavens. He briefly sees a vision of an angel within his home. His wife sees nothing, and the vision fades away. The wealthy automobile driver and his passenger then enter the home, bringing with them the beggar girl. Her parents are glad to see her.

The wealthy couple lavish gifts upon the impoverished family, including many food items. A small crowd has gathered at the poor family's home, and the film has a happy ending.
