This is more interesting as film than as documentary, and part of that is because Quinn is a bit of a narcissist -- she's more interested in herself than her subjects. The film is ostensibly about a handful of women and their experiences with aging, but Quinn's voice-over is emphasized in such a way to draw attention to her. (She seems to be pointing toward some kind of realization that she herself had over the course of making the documentary, although we can't really tell what it is.) And that doesn't even bring into account the fact that her documentary pays more attention to its visual style than to the women in the film. To be fair, the film is something of an experiment, and I enjoyed it in its uniqueness. But when your film is about aging women, you tend to want something a little more personal, a little more human. This certainly isn't, and neither is Quinn -- her androgynous prettiness, strong features, wearing a ball cap, filmed in bluish black and white. It's the furthest thing from human emotion you could imagine.
You often feel as if it's a little condescending to the women in the film. One woman died before the cameras rolled, we are told -- and Quinn adds, "So I don't know what she had for breakfast" in a steady kind of emotively soulless tone. It feels more than slightly mocking. The information we get about the women is from listening to their answers to unheard questions. It's certainly an interesting film (I liked it a lot more than this lets on), but these flaws should be addressed. 8/10
