An interesting point for a western audience
jonathantrenary25 April 2009
Under One Sky deals with a topic most westerners are unfamiliar with: veiling. It specifically concerns the practice of hijab, or wearing a veil, by Arab women in Canada. It does an excellent job of presenting the views of Arab-Canadian women on why they do or don't wear the veil. Some argue against the repressive elements that the veil represents and others argue for its modesty and ability to actually liberate women from what some consider to be judgmental society. The documentary is very even-handed and provides an excellent feminist perspective on hijab outside of the Middle East. It's a topic the West knows little about, so I recommend you watch it if you have the chance to see it.
