Docudrama of the political climate that led to the confederation of Canada in 1867. It's six years earlier, and the union of Upper and Lower Canada, may befall the same fate of civil war happening south of their border in the United States in the opposition party wanting to renegotiate the terms of the two colonies' union. Currently there is equal representation by each colony, whereas the opposition, led by Oliver Mowat, wants representation by population with the population in Upper Canada now far outstripping that of Lower Canada. The leader of the ruling party, John A. Macdonald, is being pushed in a corner by the proposal, he already under much criticism for the expense of the railroad joining the two Canadas while ships lose business moving cargo. He knows he will lose the support of Lower Canada if he crumbles to the pressure. However, it may be a pipe dream that will get him out of this conundrum while preventing war between the Canadas.
