The film is based on Shakespeare's popular comic drama 'The Comedy of Errors'.

Gulzar was writer of Do Dooni Chaar 1968 which didn't do well hence he decided to remake the film as Angoor.But no producer was ready to invest money in remake of flop film.Until Gulzar met businesses men Jai Singh whose favorite play was Shakespeare's Comedy Of Errors which was inspiration behind Do Dooni Chaar and it's Indian version Bengali film Bhranti Bilas 1963.

Since actress Moushumi Chatterjee was pregnant during the making of this film, Gulzar had to rely on many long shots and closeups while filming her scenes.
