I would say that the World's Strongest Man competition has seen its best days. These days, the strong man world is dominated by a polish brute named Mariusz Pudzianowski. No disrespect, but the golden days of this sport I feel was in the early 1990s, when the Icelandic strong man Magnus ver Magnusson was in his prime. Those days you had guys with more charisma, like the South-African Gerrit Badenhorst. My favorite vintage is 1992, when the Dutchman Ted van der Parre won the competition hosted in Iceland. Van der Parre was 210 centimeters with relatively thin legs, he used to be a middle distance runner, and a huge torso. The last event was the famous Husafelt stone carry. I remember the always great commentator being very impressed with van der Parre as he carried the huge stone over the dusty volcanic road.

  • Van der Parre got an appalling grip there..he is relying on brute strength..! A great show this.
