Madcap doesn't begin to describe it!
gregcouture21 April 2003
Back in the early 1960s, Japan's Toho Studios bought a theater from the Fox West Coast chain on LaBrea Ave. in the mid-Wilshire district of Los Angeles, beautifully and comfortably remodelled it, and used it as a showcase almost exclusively for its own product. With a large Japanese-speaking audience available, it was quite a success. I saw several pictures there, most of them simultaneously sub-titled in English and in Cantonese (rather distracting, you may be sure!) This frenetic comedy, about a gang of Tokyo pickpockets led by a kimono-clad lovely, had a full theater roaring with laughter. I didn't even bother to keep up with the subtitles, since what was happening on the screen was so fast-paced and downright hilarious. I'd love to see it again, but please!, in the proper ratio. (It was photographed in "Tohoscope" - Toho's version of CinemaScope.) I can dream, can't I?
