Superstar City
Nodriesrespect24 June 2006
Chances are that you were lured into watching this particular adult film because of its ridiculously superstar-laden cast. If so, you will most definitely not be disappointed. Other than that, this worthy early '80s attempt at couples carnality boasts bright and colorful cinematography and a pleasingly brisk pace courtesy of pseudonymous one time (?) director "Lawrence Talbot", derived from Lon Chaney Jr's character name in THE WOLF MAN.

Modestly breasted Jesie St. James (Sam Weston's muse in classic fare such as EASY, VISTA VALLEY PTA and the underrated HOTLINE) runs a lingerie company and sends out a number of scarlet envelopes containing invitations to various applicants for a job opening at her enterprise. As they all dress up in Jesie's patented finery, each woman details in lieu of a more traditional job interview how she met and fell in lust/love with her current husband. The hostess kicks off by relating a sensuous body-painting session with Bill Michaels, a decent-looking guy in spite of a then very fashionable mullet ! Joanna Storm (Kay Parker's blind daughter in Cecil Howard's exceptional FIRESTORM) met her Mr Right (David Israel Sandler, who co-starred in Candida Royalle's early FEMME features) at a clothing store, dragged him off to the park and had him right there and then, under the watchful eye of self-pleasuring Tanya Lawson (billed as just "Tanya" in the credits), the Great Love of Ron Jeremy's life and star of Eve Milan's silly but fun FLASHPANTS. My choice for best of show would be the next scene with Tiffany Clark (Mrs Fred Lincoln at the time and the revelation of Richard Milner's sleeper hit CENTERFOLD FEVER) who tries hypnosis at the hands of psychiatrist Paul Thomas – the obvious choice for this kind of part – in order to give up smoking. Actually, two sex scenes occur simultaneously here : a stunningly shot beach encounter that plays out in Tiffany's mind and its real life counterpart taking place on the shrink's couch. Adult's all purpose Oriental at the time, Mai Lin (who showed some honest to goodness acting ability in Ron Sullivan's BETWEEN LOVERS), chips in next with a hot tub and elevator romp (I know, it sounds weird but it sort of makes sense in the movie !) with Belgian performer Jose Duval, best known for portraying the title character in John Leslie's THE PILLOWMAN. Always nice to see a fellow countryman getting lucky ! While Lin and Storm sneak off for a little ladies only relief and maid Veronica Hart (in a disposable non-sex role but it's good to see her anyway) suggestively snacks on an orange, blue movie legend Vanessa Del Rio solidifies the first of several comeback bids with an award-winning number on Jerry Butler (Mr RAW TALENT himself) as they both get drunk at a party, make out on the fire escape and break into someone's apartment, only to be joined by the residents (Tanya Lawson again and some guy unidentified in any source I've come across) for a friendly group grope that rounds things out nicely.

The story, such as it is, already seems to foreshadow the video format that was going to develop over the next couple of years, i.e. group of people sit around swapping sexy stories. There are no clever lines (save for Mai Lin's out of the blue remark about sex on public transport and potholes which at least gets a chuckle out of me every time) or inspired thespian turns. The actresses basically play themselves or, perhaps more accurately, play up to the stereotypical image fans may have of them. Jesie's classy and sophisticated, Vanessa an unstoppable firebrand, Tiffany's seductively smoldering, Joanna a fun-loving airhead, and so forth. Their sexual talents are in full swing though and this handsomely produced feature provides a solid showcase for those, cementing their deserved superstar status.

It's time for a few sexy stories

Warning: Spoilers
Wealthy lingerie company owner Valerie (played with saucy elan by the slim Jessie St. James) invites several hopeful female employee prospects to a special private party. Valerie encourages all the women to share their most intimate stories on how they met their husbands as a means of acquiring a much-coveted new available position in her company.

Director Lawrence Talbot does an able job of crafting an intoxicating erotic atmosphere and makes nifty use of various New York City locations that include both Central Park and Times Square. The bang-up distaff cast of prime Golden Age adult cinema luminaries helps a lot: Slutty blonde Joanna Storm, lovely Mai Lin, fetching brunette Tiffany Clark, and the always lusty'n'luscious Latina Vanessa Del Rio all generate plenty of heat in their scorching individual carnal set pieces. The sex scenes featured herein in are quite arousing and energetic, with Storm's bawdy Central Park romp and Lin's passionate hot tub and elevator tryst with Jose Duval in his adult film debut rating as definite steamy highlights. The smooth cinematography by Clayton Forbes provides a neat lush look. The catchy theme song and moody score by Niel Downe and Randy Jetson do the tuneful trick. Nice'n'spicy stuff.
