The 90s were a great time
TheDanielBaxter3 August 2022
As a kid in the 90s, you'd come home from school, watch Goosebumps, Are You Afraid Of The Dark?, Kenan N' Kel or Power Rangers (to lighten the mood), then Big Wolf On Campus. Followed by WCW Nitro and maybe Clash Of The Titans on TCM for the 30th time (did TCM have contractual obligations to show that movie every week?)

None of what I said above is a joke or exaggeration. Life was just That good back then, and I look back fondly at the great memories of Brandon Quinn and Danny Smith tackling cheesy monsters every episode.

Wolf bite in the right direction!
insomniac_rod19 June 2006
Ah! I have good memories for this one. I really enjoyed it's comedic touch mixed with adventure. Our main characters are really likable ; specially the two best friends. The winning formula of having the stud beings friends with the geek works again.

The situations were really funny and entertaining and a little touch of Horror didn't harm.

The direction, cinematography, and art direction are great for a low budgeter from Canada. I really don't understand why this show was canceled after three seasons.

I hope it will get a DVD release soon. I'd say it's a tender, naive Horror/Comedy show.

Enjoy!

Big Wolf on Campus: A Howling Good Time
PopRox91393 October 2003
I absolutely loved this show! Tommy, typical jock, gets turned into a werewolf and befriends gothic Merton. Together they deal with a great spectrum of baddies ranging from a cat girl to a swamp monster, to the Buffy-spoof, Muffy the Werewolf Slayer. This show had so much going for it not just because of the great characters and cheesy monsters, but because it was just so darn funny. Every episode Merton and Tommy would exchange dialogue that played along these lines: Merton-"This is just like in [insert movie here]!" Tommy-"What happened?" Merton-"[Dialogue about career/box office/non-related movie talk]." Tommy-"No, what happened in the movie!" It happened a lot, yet it never got old. Other interesting parts include the TV-addicted older brother, Dean, Merton's hearst, and Merton's angry little sister Becky. Oh, please, ABC Family, lose the Olsen-palooza and take back Big Wolf on Campus!

Easily one of my favorite TV shows of ALL TIME
thatty724 January 2012
As you may already know, Big Wolf is about a popular high school jock who gets attacked by a werewolf and befriends the geeky goth kid at school to help him with his "wolfy" side. Together they fight evil monsters that come into town. It's a formula that's been used hundreds of times. However, I think this is one of best.

It stands out from the rest of the shows & movies that have this same type of thing. Not because of one specific reason but, for so many. It just works. The main actors work so well together. I think the biggest reason this show is great is the humor. It definitely does not take itself seriously but, in a good way. It has the same type of humor that Buffy the Vampire Slayer does. A lot of pop culture references and even though this came out over 10 years ago, the jokes are still relevant.

I know it will probably never happen but, I wish that they would come out with DVDs. I think it would build a new fan base, especially with all the vampire/werewolf/zombie stuff that's popular right now. Also, it's a show that a person of any age would like. It was probably made for ages 10-16 but, it really is entertaining for all ages.

Awesome!
spiff-1227 August 2007
This was one of those shows that was sandwiched between brainless fluff on YTV and painted with the same brush by most who never gave it the time of night. It was a jewel in the trash - heap. Lost in time by those who didn't have the foresight to realize its value to DVD. I would buy it in a New York Second. This was half an hour of youthful witty fun that would raise a person's mood from a 5 to an 8. I'm mournful to those who never got a chance to see it. Both Danny Smith and Brandon Quinn seem to be doing very well for themselves. I'm glad the talent of these two exceptional individuals continues to shine through. Eventually, I hope, the notion will come back to bring this series back to TV and not between place-marker shows with similar themes but written by overpaid chimpanzees.

Pleasant enough

You might want to start with the second season. The new addition of Lori as a character adds a certain spark that the first season was missing.

Although, the first season is a little more focused on what little story and character there is. In the first season, we see Tommy coping with being a werewolf, trying to hide his werewolf identity, the town reacting to possible werewolf sightings, Merton looking for a cure and often getting guidance from reading about noted werewolf expert Fluglhoff. The writers don't mine much from this material, but it's still pretty interesting to play around with what little they give us.

The second season has more of a focus on Lori and her dynamic with the group. Fortunately she isn't like "Cousin Oliver" from "The Brady Bunch", the show doesn't force her on us, they handle her integration into the show very well. However, near the end of the second season, they kind of run out of ideas for her, and her character winds up being an after-thought in the third season.

"Missed opportunity" comes to mind when watching this show. They'll occasionally present a good idea or character, then they'll start shrugging.

While minor characters, Merton's little sis, Becky, and Tommy's big bro, Dean, add a little more to it, making it slightly more palatable. Merton can be such a dork, nice contrast to normal teenage Becky who may walk into his room while he's making out with no one. The guy who plays Dean is so incredibly charming. The role is pretty sad as throughout the entire series he's obese and always sitting in a chair watching tv. Looks like he could be around thirty. But the guy who plays Dean helps the viewer ignore any of that as he has such a presence and big brotherly vibes.

If you've got nothing better to do, cherry picking an episode here and there (possibly from second season) can be a little fun. Jock-turned-werewolf aided by enthusiastic and creative goth as they take on different types of horror, whether it be a creature or normal human with odd powers. Go on the imdb episode list and pick whichever episode sounds good to you. Third season I'd be more weary of. They are low on ideas and Merton seems more annoying than usual.

Great teen supernatural show

I used to watch this and I loved it. The characters were all funny and memorable and there was a wide variety of adventures and villains each episode. I think I'm a lot like Merton with his trivia!

Adequate Fun
ChuDog17 April 1999
By no means is "Big Wolf on Campus" outstanding or superior, and I doubt that it will ever grow beyond might-be status. After all, the plot is so unoriginal I'm surprised that we haven't seen it more often. But the show plays it well, with an energetic flow and a charismatic title character. So don't just pass it off, and it might grow on you. It isn't often that we see a youth-oriented show that knows what it's talking about.

Cheesy, but worth the watch
rainman-3752519 July 2019
The image quality might be bad enough and the special effects cheesy enough for a show in the early 2000s to get canceled, but it was a rather fun and enjoyable with a lot of that classic horror film charm and a humorous edge. It's like the show was intentionally made cheesy to pay homage to the multitude of classic horror film series that spawned it and an incredibly humorous edge. This show died way too soon and there isn't even an English release of the episodes anywhere so good luck finding this hidden gem. I do believe that YouTube does have the show in a greatly reduced quality and about half of the episodes missing.

BWOC is a classic teen drama show that aired in the late 90s. It was about a teen-adult getting bit by a wolf where he would become a wolf when the night struck. He would fight bad guys as he kept his alterego a secret from others.

BWOC was a great drama, comdey teen, action show. Despite its short run I'd still consider BWOC a classic. If you liked Buffy the Vampire slayer, you should like this one too.

I loved it
tjp200525 September 2006
Growing up as a kid there were always those couple shows that we really love but get discarded for bigger long lasting shows. One of these shows was big wolf on campus. Its a simple story: guy turned werewolf, fights evil. But it is so well written and they are always funny. I love that show and if they never come out with the seasons on DVD, i will be sad but then again there is always www.youtube.com Anyway this show has been one to remember. All the characters are really fun and interesting to listen to. The villains are very well thought out and are also fun to watch. Its not a ten because it is not the perfect show and it was cut down in its prime, but i can live with that. Good show a must watch.

The Best Show Around
buffbabe2318 December 2000
"Big Wolf On Campus" is one of the best shows that I have seen in a long time. Not only are the actors great, but every episode of the show is great, too. It has a certain quality about it- it intermixes the horrors of high school life and the "fun" stuff that you really want to see on television. I've never seen one episode of the series that made me cringe, like some of the other "teen" shows that are out there. The show has a great humorous quality to it that really makes the show what it is. Besides of the humour, the actors also make you love the show. Every single actor makes their role come alive and they all bring a lot to the show. This show is especially one of the best on the air because it really is a "family" show. People of every age can get enjoyment out of it. I guarantee that if you watch this show you will love it and fall in love with the characters themselves.

Teen Wolf meets Buffy The Vampire Slayer
anthonywltrs18 March 2022
This show is awesome. It was awesome when it first aired way back in the very late 90s to the early mid 2000s and it's still awesome watching it in 2022. I loved this show as a kid so much and would watch it every day after school at around 5pm just as I having dinner. Even long after this series ended as I finished primary school and started high school, I never forgot this series. It became forever etched in my brain

As the title says it's as if Michael J Fox's character became involved in the world of Buffy The Vampire Slayer dealing with monsters, vampires, other werewolves and other freaky creatures. One of the central characters a popular jock and over all nice guy Tommy Dawkins gets bitten by a Warewolf while out camping with friends the weekend before starting his senior year at school. He ends up befriending the school outsider and goth Merton Dingle who arguably is the best character due to his comedic nature. Together not only does Merton help Tommy control his warewolf side and help fight the bad guys but they become the best of friends...brothers even as.

As Tommy balances his new side of life being a warewolf, he has a love interest in the first season a cheerleader named Stacy with him wanting to date her but also trying to his his warewolf side. By the end of the first season it didn't work out and Stacy was written out as her actress went off to college. Then for the last two seasons Lori Baxter is introduced and joins Merton and Tommy's team fighting the bad guys. At first she became a love interest for Tommy but they decided they were better off as friends

If you haven't seen this series then you are really missing out because this show is amazing. There may be some episodes where it was silly or not as good but it's still fun to watch them because there's a lot of really good episodes out there. You can watch the entire series for free and in HD on Youtube if you go to Encore's channel. Tell em, I sent you. You won't be disappointed.

I never thought I would be able to watch Big Wolf again until I found the entire on Youtube and was able to relive my childhood. Great stuff.

I only saw this program for the first time a few weeks ago, It looked ok, so I thought I'd watch it, it was either that or do my homework! I haven't seen the first episode yet, but I was hooked from the first one I saw. It is funny and clever and has some great storylines too, I'll be watching this for as long as they show it.

The Most Amazing and Underrated Shows Ever Made
spiff-124 April 2021
Big Wolf on Campus does exactly what a TV show is supposed to do; Raise your spirits. Merton and Tommy play off each other like that fun monster movie comedy duo of old: Abbott and Costello. It's not just them. Secondary cast members are hilarious like the bullies "T and T". This show will raise your mood level...almost guaranteed.

A hell of a show
Angelus215 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I viewed this show I believe in year 5 or year 6 at that point I was infatuated with Buffy the vampire slayer (and i still am)

So at first I thought this show was like Buffy it was grown up and not silly but it was it was based on a high school jock who becomes a werewolf and becomes friends with the school nerd his older brother is a slob who actually comes in good use.

I watched the whole of 1st season bits of 2nd season and couple of episodes of the 3rd season.

I loved Merton his references to Buffy the vampire slayer the episode with the vampires (i think it was fangs for the memories.

Let me just say that I love this show and I am so sad that it ended. But it is stupid {in a hilarious way}. Nobody should hate me for that but some stuff is just so dumb. Even so, I would totally recommend it.

A Classic Story
PopRox913926 March 2003
Who hasn't heard the classic tale of jock meets wolf, jock gets bit by wolf and becomes a werewolf, jock meets goth, jock and goth become buds and encounter supernatural spookies? Still with me? That's pretty much the summary of Big Wolf on Campus, still one of the funniest shows ever. They spoofed on everything from telekinesis to witchy sororities, not to mention two Lost Boys spoofs with special guests Coreys Feldman and Haim. I especially liked the Muffy the Werewolf Slayer spoof. Other than overusing the word spoof, all that I have to say is that this was a really good show that was unfortunately cancelled because Fox Family changed to ABC Family and was taken over completely by Nazi Germany, I mean the Olsen twins. Bring back Big Wolf! Please? Pretty please??????

Big Wolf

I can't believe how cool this show is. The characters are so well developed, and the acting is good. Tommy and Merton (which I think it'd be a cool dude to hang out with) are the main characters of the show always getting in trouble with evil creatures. This show often portrays some trivia about horror movies, or about werewolves, vampires, and other creatures. The jokes aren't that bad, and every episode is hilarious.

Recommended!!! This big wolf absolutely rocks!

My absolute favorite show of all time!!
Maria1005 August 2003
Big Wolf On Campus is about the best show of all time!! At first, I would see commercials about it and think "That must be the stupidest show ever!". But then I watched it and totally fell in love!! It's hilarious and fun to watch. I guess it might not be for really young kids cause there are some 'scary moments' in it, but anyone like 10 and up would probably love it!!! I totally recommend it!!!

It's about Tommy, the captain of the football team and most popular kid in school and how he turns into a werewolf. He makes friends with Merton, a geek, and then Lori, who thinks his 'wolfing out' is really cool.

Unfortunatly, it is not showed on TV anymore, but when it comes back, I will be glued to the TV!

I love this show! It is a very funny horror parody, that is like Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Teen Wolf meets Eerie Indiana. When you watch it, you will INSTANTLY notice the talent of Danny Smith, who plays the loveable sidekick, Merton Dingle.

Fun for All
BHorrorWriter20 July 2005
Yes this show has been off the air for 3 years and I am only now getting on to commenting on it.

What can I say...I loved this show. It was entertaining, hilarious and introduced a younger audience to horror, fantasy and sci-fi..but in a light-hearted way.

Merton, Tommy and Lori are characters that were likable and fun to watch develop over the short run of the series.

I have introduced this show to my 5 year old - who just loved it! Too bad it was canceled after only 3 seasons - there could have been so much more!

pretty good show
JBoze31327 January 2001
This is a very good show on Fox Family network. I think it has only aired there and YTV (I think that's the name?) in Canada. A lot of the shows on Fox Family come from Canada in some manner. This particular show is filmed in Canada. I think all the production is based there. Big Wolf is really funny, in an odd kind of way. A lot of the stories and jokes are unoriginal, and probably could have been written by a high school english student, but it doesn't matter...the show totally works. The cast works really well, and the characters, you can't help but like them all...or, well, most of them atleast. The show has a nice look and a nice premise. If you like the show, visit the links page here at imdb.com, because there are petitions to save the show and get Fox Family to "buy" a third season and basically pick up the show's entire production tab themselves. It's highly doubtful, because they'll be losing money, of course...but, we can hope.

Decent teen comedy show ...
Teknofobe7016 August 2005
After working on "Sweet Valley High" and "Breaker High", I suppose "Werewolf High" seemed like the next logical step for writers Peter Knight and Chris Briggs ...

Tommy Dawkins (Brandon Quinn) is your typical high school jock -- popular, dumb and care-free ... that is, until he is out camping one night and is bitten by a werewolf. Thanks to his infliction he is forced to befriend nerdy goth outcast Merton J Dingle (Danny Smith), and together they work to conceal his lycanthropy and battle whatever evil forces set sights on the town of Pleasantville. As awkward as teenage years always are, Tommy finds that it is even more so when you're a werewolf -- especially since he wolfs out every time he gets close to Stacey Hanson (Rachelle Lefevre), the girl of his dreams. Later, Stacey is transfered to another school and Tommy sets his sights on the new girl, kick-boxing Buffy-wannabe Lori Baxter (Aimée Castle).

I caught a couple of episodes of this series when it was on, and it seemed like a pretty silly show that was aimed primarily at the teenybopper crowd. I was attracted to it at the time because obviously it featured werewolves and also it had strong similarities to Buffy, which I enjoyed. In the end I was put off by the silly WWF-style fight scenes, and the slapstick humour didn't really appeal to me all that much. However, when I watched the episodes back-to-back recently I began to really enjoy it. Many of the jokes are silly, but I'll admit it does manage to make me chuckle quite frequently. The constant movie references score particularly highly with me. The characters themselves are quite amusing ... Tommy really is an idiot, and Danny Smith who plays Merton J Dingle has become a kind of cult icon. Together the two of them form an interesting comic team.

It turns out there actually is an awful lot to enjoy here, especially if you happen to catch the series on a good day. At it's worst the show is like a kid's version of Buffy without the same level of atmosphere or wit (although it does seem to be conscious of this, throwing in direct references to the show). One problem is that the comic actors and guest stars often aren't particularly restrained, they're out there in full-on "I will make you laugh" mode which can come off more annoying than amusing. But hell, there are certainly worse things you could be watching.

If you're looking for an interesting, dark and brilliant werewolf series, check out Frank Lupo's Werewolf. But if you're just after an entertaining, amusing and diverting version of "Teen Wolf", then this is the best there is.
