Jennifer Hale: Naomi Hunter

Quotes

  • Naomi : You mustn't allow yourself to be chained to fate, to be ruled by your genes. Human beings can choose the kind of life that they want to live. What's important is that you choose life... and then live.

  • Dr. Naomi Hunter : Are you smoking?

Solid Snake : Yeah, so what?

Dr. Naomi Hunter : Didn't you know that cigarettes contain benzopyrene, a chemical that leads to lung cancer? We now know that when benzopyrene enters the body, it changes to benzopyrene diolepoxide and attaches to the receptors on the P53 gene, the gene which causes lung cancer. The BPDE attaches to the P53 gene in three specific locations and causes pre-cancerous changes to the lung tissue.

Solid Snake : You know a lot about science, but you don't know how good a cigarette tastes in the morning.

  • Naomi : Well, if you come back in one piece, maybe I'll let you do a strip search on me.

Solid Snake : I'll hold you to that, doctor.

  • Naomi : Live Snake... that's all I can tell you.

  • Roy Campbell : [after having submitted to Ocelot's torture, Snake escapes and makes his way back to where Sniper Wolf had gunned down Meryl. Colonel Campbell then contacts Snake via Codec]  Snake, about Meryl.

Solid Snake : Colonel, I'm sorry.

Roy Campbell : Listen to me.

Solid Snake : I wasn't able to protect her.

Roy Campbell : Snake, it's okay. You did what you could. Now, let it rest.

    Solid Snake : Colonel...

Roy Campbell : She joined up of her own free will. I'm sure she was prepared for this.

Solid Snake : No, you're wrong.

    Roy Campbell : ...?

Solid Snake : Meryl thought she had to become a soldier, thought it was the only way. She said she thought it would bring her closer to her dead father.

Roy Campbell : [surprised]  She said that?

Solid Snake : She wasn't ready for real combat. I shouldn't have pushed her so hard. It's all my fault.

Master Miller : That's not like you, Snake.

Roy Campbell : Master? What is it?

Master Miller : Sorry for eavesdropping, but I just couldn't listen anymore.

    Solid Snake : Master...

Master Miller : Snake, you can have regrets if you want to. It's only natural, but you can't keep attacking yourself for things that happened in the past. That road leads to madness, believe me.

Mei Ling : He's right. Don't kick yourself. It doesn't suit a legend like you. And besides that, for all we know, Meryl's okay, right?

    Solid Snake : Mei Ling...

Roy Campbell : Snake, forget about Meryl. Stop Liquid. That's what Meryl would want, too.

Solid Snake : You're right. Meryl would say the same thing.

    Naomi : Snake?

    Solid Snake : What?

Naomi : Meryl... she's pretty special to you, huh?

Solid Snake : Yes, she's special. There aren't many women like her around.

    Naomi : That's not what I meant.

Solid Snake : She's the Colonel's niece, and a combat buddy.

Naomi : Is that all? C'mon...

Solid Snake : This is like a police interrogation.

    Naomi : No, I just...

Roy Campbell : I guess it's in the genes.

Solid Snake : The genes? What are you talking about, Colonel?

Roy Campbell : [chuckles]  No, I just remembered about Naomi's grandfather. I think Naomi said he rose as high as assistant secretary in the FBI during Edgar Hoover's time.

Solid Snake : Is that right?

Naomi : Yes. Yes, uh... he was, uh, Japanese, and he became a special undercover investigator to nab the mafia.

Master Miller : When was that?

Naomi : Oh, sometime in the '50's, I guess.

    Master Miller : Where?

Naomi : Uh, New York, I think.

Master Miller : Naomi, I thought you didn't have any family.

  • Roy Campbell : [Talking about Snake face his twin Liquid]  That's why we really need you for this mission.

Naomi : You're the only one who can beat him. Now that I've met you, I know. You've got something that he doesn't. I can see it in your eyes.

Snake : Why don't I find that thought more conforting?

  • Roy Campbell : You okay, Snake?

Snake : I'm not the right guy. I can't save the world.

    Naomi : What's wrong?

Snake : I gave into the pain. I'm sorry, Colonel. I sacrificed Meryl to save myself...

Roy Campbell : Snake... She was a soldier. She knew the risks. Battlefield casualties are always tragic, but they're an unavoidable part of war.

Naomi : Don't blame yourself. You still have a mission to do.

  • Solid Snake : [after fighting the cyborg ninja, then realizing who he really is]  Gray Fox! Colonel, that ninja is Gray Fox. No doubt about it.

Roy Campbell : Ridiculous. You of all people should know he died in Zanzibar.

Naomi : No. He should have died, but he didn't.

    Roy Campbell : What?

Naomi : It happened before I joined FOX-HOUND's medical staff. They were using a soldier for their gene therapy experiments.

Roy Campbell : I never heard that.

Naomi : It happened right after you retired. My predecessor, Dr. Clark, was in charge.

    Roy Campbell : Dr. Clark?

Naomi : Yes. He started the gene therapy project.

Solid Snake : And where is he now?

Naomi : He was killed in an explosion in his lab two years ago.

Solid Snake : So, what about this soldier?

Naomi : Apparently, for their test subject, they decided to use the body of a soldier who was recovered after the fall of Zanzibar.

Solid Snake : And that was Gray Fox?

Roy Campbell : But, he was already dead!

Naomi : Yes, but they revived him. They fitted him with a prototype exoskeleton and kept him drugged for four years while they experimented on him like a plaything. Today's genome soldiers were born from those experiments.

Roy Campbell : That's the sickest thing I ever heard.

Naomi : They used him to test all sorts of gene therapy techniques.

Solid Snake : Naomi, why didn't you tell us about this sooner?

Naomi : Because it's confidential information.

Solid Snake : Is that the only reason?

    Naomi : ...

Roy Campbell : Naomi, what happened to Gray Fox after that?

Naomi : The record says he died in the explosion.

Roy Campbell : I see. But even if that ninja is Gray Fox, the question is why?

Solid Snake : From what I could tell, he didn't know who he was.

Roy Campbell : Are you saying that he's just a mindless robot?

Solid Snake : I'm not sure, but he seems intent on fighting me to the death. We'll meet again. I know it.

Naomi : So, you'll fight again... until you kill him?

Solid Snake : Hmm. I'd rather not, but maybe that's what he wants.

  • Naomi : Well, I-I researched it after I became an adult. My grandfather was already dead by the time I learned about him. I never even had the chance to meet him.

    Roy Campbell : Oh.

    Naomi : Snake, good luck.

Roy Campbell : Watch your back, Snake.
