An excellent stage adaptation of Ivo Bresan's play
This is an excellent Polish version of Ivo Bresan's play (also available in original "Predstava Hamleta u selu Mrdusa Donja" in IMDB when you do search with the author). This stage adaptation made for TV includes superb appearances of Janusz Gajos and Janusz Rewinski. However, in order to fully benefit from the spectacle one must not only understand Polish, but also know what life under early stage Eastern European communism was like. Some knowledge of Shakespeare's drama (which I am sure everybody possesses) will help observe how this classical motive is beautifully intertwined in the obscure, rural reality of communist Yugoslavia.
As for this particular version, Olga Lipinska deserves a great credit for directing the play. Janusz Gajos's delivers an acting performance of Oscar calibre. Unfortunately, a lot of foreign works never make it abroad. Or perhaps it is good; they simply would not be understood elsewhere.
