Sublet, an entertaining 4AM TV movie
echo_in_eden10 August 2007
I'm still watching the movie as I type this, but so far it has been interesting. I started watching it probably about 10 minutes in, so I'm missing the very basic set-up, but they do eventually get the pieces together if you missed the beginning. The actors do their parts very well. So far its been the basic government conspiracy/mistaken identity type movie, with a dash of romance. It is definitely a TV movie, I wouldn't have paid to see this in any form, but worth watching if you're bored at 4 AM and it comes on TV. The ending was a bit mediocre (I believe there could have been a stronger ending, or something a bit more exciting at the least). It seems like there would be room for a sequel, however the character development to continue was not there. The plot twists are enticing, however predictable.

Watch if NOTHING else on.

Warning: Spoilers
This movie was a train wreck. Danny Nucci came off like a sniveling wimp too stupid to ask the right questions at the right times. David Carradine did an OK job as the gruff newspaperman but too bad the plot took a dump on him. The entire story was predictable yet somehow the plot was made to be confusing in parts. People were murdered by gunshot in daylight with nobody apprehended. In one scene, it was said that the main characters where going to a party but really they just went to a club; how infuriating! Bad guys were murdered and drug away without any explanation, conveniently letting our inept hero off the hook. Stuart Dempsey never got over being the biggest puss around yet we are to believe he had the balls to shoot somebody? Don't forget the ever- lasting love christened by one night of cheap sex with a stranger. Enthralling!

In closing, this movie should only be watched if nothing else is on. There are many better movies with David Carradine in them so don't waste your time here.

A good but not great entertainment

There was enough gripping suspense to make me want to see the film through to the end, despite a few times when it dragged. Having the star bare his torso so often is a clue that more time might should been spent developing plot devices. Still, it was a compelling (if far-fetched) story and I'll probably watch it again some day -- when folding laundry.

we have seen this type of film done before

The basic plot of mistaken identity, world wide conspiracy has been done many times:But SUBLET has something the others did not,& that my friends is the star DANNY NUCCI is an absolute delight as the ever so naive & innocent young man caught in a web of intrigue & danger & of course love.

some parts are a bit confusing, but the entire film is so enjoyable it does not matter. Sit back & have fun like I did

Done before, done better....

This movie is hugely disappointing. The premise is fine, if tired - but when you're more interested in the bad guys than the hero, something is wrong.

Danny Nucci is good looking - something you can't avoid noticing as he's pretty in every scene...whether he's waking from a drug induced slumber or getting off the floor after getting slugged, he's still picture perfect. I know it's fiction, but please!

Also, his performance is sluggish at best. Could he move any slower?! Actually, the whole movie suffers from too many pauses, too much camera "lingering"...lots of "confused expression" pans. So, a great movie if you just want to see a very pretty young man look confused, yet constantly well-groomed.

Not bad, sort of funny at the beginning, not predictable (SPOILERS)

Warning: Spoilers
Stuart Dempsey is not having a good day. He is moving from Ohio for a low-level job at The New York Globe and, while on the train, he borrows part of another passenger's copy of the Globe to look for an apartment. A strange man sits down next to him. The lights go out. When they come back on, the men are gone--along with Stuart's luggage. When Stuart tries to use his ATM card, he is told he has no bank account. He goes to the paper at the time he was supposed to meet Mr. Beringer. But Mr. Beringer is out to lunch at the time Stuart was to be interviewed (Stuart doesn't have the appropriate clothes). Or is he? The door is open and there he is, eating. But Mr. Beringer says the office is closed. Then he realizes he is speaking to Stuart Dempsey. Well, in that case ...

Stuart gets a great deal on a sublet. The catch is that he might have to move out if Jason comes back. It's a nice place, but things are about to get complicated. When Stuart dates Jason's girlfriend Daphne, people assume he is Jason. Some of these people have Russian accents and aren't very nice. Eventually, Stuart sees a chance to become a reporter, because Jason is supposedly a bureaucrat. Where did he get the money and why are these people after him? And why do the people Stuart met when he got to town keep disappearing? Stuart gets himself in a lot of trouble, and while his problems are funny at first, later the movie gets quite serious.

The best thing about this movie may have been the music. In the first half and at the very end, the music was real jazz or at least influenced by real jazz, with harmonica and piano the main instruments. Unfortunately, most of the music in the second half was forgettable new age with synthesizer.

We are not told a lot of details until we have to know them. There is a lot of mystery in this movie, and even at the end I wasn't sure I knew everything. It was okay, but nothing that great. There were a couple of standout performers. One was the actor playing a janitor and computer whiz known as 'The Source', who was able to explain a lot of Stuart's problems. The end had a lot of excitement and was very hard to follow, and it had the best acting performance of the whole movie ...

SPOILERS FOLLOW! ... that of the real Jason.

'The Source' told Stuart that the real Stuart Dempsey died as a child.

Beringer was not Beringer. He kept showing up wherever Stuart was and updating someone by cell phone. The real Beringer was in his office one day and he had no idea who Stuart was.

The mystery men from the train showed up about halfway through the movie to cause problems for Stuart.
