Happy New Year,Comrade.
morrison-dylan-fan8 September 2020
Joining in a Russia/ Soviet Union viewing challenge taking place this month,I decided to dig into my unwatched films from the country. Pulling this title out of the pile and finding it had no review on this site,I got set to start my viewing at 13:00.

Note:Some spoilers in review.

View on the film:

Clinking glasses in first person as all the cast wish the audience a "Happy New Year, Comrades", director Larisa Shepitko & cinematographer Pavel Lebeshev toast this New Years celebration TV Movie with a utterly strange kaleidoscope psychedelic atmosphere.

Gathering up party guests such as Baba Yaga and Vodyanoy, Shepitko gives these folk tale legends a oddly camp, kitsch appearance, which rings out on the screen when a surprise guest-a dwarf dressed as Santa, bounces in to watch the TV with them.

Stealing Russian dubbed footage of Disney's Snow White, Shepitko stirs a peculiar, hypnotic groove via cutting between the likes of Baba Yaga, to the wonderfully quirky, latest Soviet Pop & dance sensations (!) showcasing their latest productions as the clock strikes 13PM.
