East Is East (1999)

Goofs

East Is East

Edit

Continuity

When Meenah kicks the ball through Mr Moorhouse's window at the Enoch Powell poster, the ball hits slightly right of Powell's head, but in the next shot the hole is conveniently dead-centre.
When Nazier runs away from the wedding there's a shot of Tariq without his hat on, yet the next shot shows George with Tariq behind him removing his hat.
In the first shot of the house, two photos hang above a mantel. The distance between the photos increases between shots.
In the second-to-last scene, Meenah's sari switches from showing most of her stomach to none of it.

Incorrectly regarded as goofs

In the film they constantly use the term "shillings" when referring to prices and money. Britain adopted the pounds and pence decimal system on 15 February 1971, and over the next year or two ditched the shilling and pence currency. In the film's opening scene the caption reads "Salford, Manchester, 1971," and after the eldest brother runs out on his wedding a second caption, in the second or third scene, then reads "six months later," meaning that Britain had changed over the currency, so when one of the brothers keeps begging his mum for 10 shillings, etc., it might sound factually incorrect, but there was a changeover period and use of both currencies was permitted. Shilling coins remained legal tender and in circulation for many years; the sixpence remained in circulation until 1980 for machines, but was removed from general use after 1973; conversely the 50 New Pence coin (worth 10 shillings) was introduced two years before decimalisation. People didn't stop using the word "shilling" for many years although by 1974, the use of old money had gone.

Anachronisms

The introduction states that George emigrated from Pakistan in 1937, but Pakistan did not exist until 1947. In 1937 it was part of India.
When the family enters Bradford, they run over speed bumps, which wouldn't have been there in the 1970s.
When the family goes to the telephone box to phone Nazir, a train passes in the background. The movie is set in 1971, and the train carries a color scheme (Intercity) that was not introduced until the mid-1980s.
Terraced housing in Salford would have had sash windows back in 1971/2. Only one house had them in the shots.
On the rooftops, modern metal gas vents are seen in place of the ceramic chimney pots that would have been in use at the time.

Crew or equipment visible

When the family sets off for Bradford in the van, a very large camera crew of about a dozen people is visible, reflected in the van.

Errors in geography

When the Khans are traveling to Bradford from their home in Salford, they drive past the Derwent Dam reservoir. This is visible on the A57 road from Manchester to Sheffield (which is about 40 miles south of Bradford) and is nowhere near the established route from Salford to Bradford.

Boom mic visible

In the Bradford scene when Ella and Meenah are in the kitchen, Ella comforts her friend who's upset that her daughter's in Pakistan, in the background on the painting on the wall the reflection of the boom mic is visible as it goes up.
