- Anoop (Swarup Dutta) studies law in Calcutta, while his widowed mom (Kamini Kaushal) lives in a small town in West Bengal. He has a sister, Sudha (Nandita Thakur), who is married to Anil (Suresh Chatwal) and lives in Calcutta. Since Anoop is of marriageable age, his mom has selected a prospective bride for him in her neighborhood.
The girl's name is Vidya. When Anoop returns home, his mother asks him for his approval, but he says he wants to see the girl first. He goes to see Vidya, and also gets to meet another village belle by the name of Minoo (Jaya Bhaduri) (Mrinmayee), the daughter of Sharda (Ratnamala) and Ramchandra (Nana Palsikar).
Minoo is a carefree girl who spends her time playing with the village kids, stealing mangoes from the orchard and generally having fun. Minoo has no respect for the elders of the village (Like Kaki (Leela Mishra)) and stands up to them if they try to discipline her. Village elders advise Sharda to teach some manners to Minoo, but Ramchandra is very protective of his daughter and encourages her childish behavior. Despite her mother's advise, Minoo sneaks out of the house to play and create mischief.
When Anoop goes to see Vidya, Minoo interrupts the meeting and even steals Anoop's shoes and Anoop has to walk back barefoot in mud and ankle-deep water. Anoop returns home, tells his mom that he cannot marry Vidya, and will marry only Minoo. Anoop's mother calls Minoo for a meeting and finds that she is not educated, can't count and doesn't know any housework of any kind.
His mother reluctantly agrees, and the marriage takes place. Minoo's mother tries to teach her some manners before Minoo goes to her mothers-in-law's place, but Minoo is adamant not change her ways. It is then that they find out that Minoo has no household skills. Neither is she educated, nor mature enough to understand her relationship with Anoop.
Her only interests appear to be stealing mangoes and other fruit and playing with children much younger than her. Anoop's mom is quite exasperated with Minoo and is compelled to keep the new bride under lock and key. Minoo keeps running away from home and Sudha has to fetch her back into the house. Minoo gets a letter from her dad and wants to visit him, but Anoop's mother refuses permission. Minoo runs away at night and catches a boat to her father's village, but the boatman Banwari (Yunus Pervez) is a family loyalist and brings Minoo back home.
Minoo throws tantrums when restricted and breaks stuff in her room. She behaves like a kid. Anoop is still very understanding and tries to bond with Minoo over things that she likes. Anoop even arranges for a boat and takes Minoo to meet her father. Ramchandra is pleasantly surprised as he was not able to attend Minoo's wedding (as his company refused to give him leave). Anoop and Minoo cook a meal for Ramchandra and the next day they go sightseeing around the village. Post that Anoop and Minoo return to their village.
When the time comes for Anoop to return to Calcutta, he asks Minoo to come with him (As his mother refuses to let her stay with her), but she refuses. Minoo says she will stay with her mother for the 2 - 2.5 years that Anoop will be away. Before leaving, Anoop asks Minoo to kiss him, but she laughs at the idea and ends up offending Anoop.
Anoop's mother cannot handle Minoo's childishness and refuses to let her stay with her. Anoop accordingly leaves Minoo with her mom, Sharda. Once Anoop leaves her and heads back to Calcutta, Minoo starts realizing she misses him. All her earlier activities of fooling around and playing with the village kids loses their charm and, in her loneliness, she realizes her love for Anoop.
She then tells her mom that she wants to go back to Anoop's house, reconcile with her mother-in-law and live with her. Minoo goes back, a changed person. Anoop's mom welcomes her daughter-in-law. Minoo excels in her household duties. But Anoop does not visit even for his holidays. Minoo realizes that, when she had refused to accompany him to Calcutta, Anoop's ego was bruised. He had promised that he would come only when she wrote to him to come back. So she writes a letter (she learns to read and write as she is illiterate) to Anoop telling him to come home. But she does not have his address, so Anoop never gets the letter. In the meantime, Anoop's mom, realizing that Minoo is truly missing her husband, suggests a trip to Calcutta to visit him. It is in Anoop's sister's house in Calcutta that the couple finally comes together.
