Gene Simmons in Detroit Rock City (1999)

Goofs

Detroit Rock City

Edit

Continuity

When Jam's mother lights the KISS tickets, she goes to set them in the canister and the tickets are face down. The next close-up shot of the tickets burning, they are facing up.
When the scalper is directing Hawk to the stripping contest to win the money to buy a KISS ticket, the scalper has a cigarette in his mouth. The shot quickly cuts away to a different angle and the cigarette is gone but magically reappears in his mouth again when the shot returns to the original angle.
When the boys get in the car to go to Detroit, Jam is, at first, wearing his preppy outfit. But then, he is suddenly wearing blue jeans, a gray shirt, and a denim jacket.
When Hawk gets his first bourbon in the strip club, it has a lime. While conversing with the bartender, it disappears. When he raises his glass to Amanda Finch, it is on the glass again.
The length of the scalper's cigarette grows and shrinks in between shots.

Factual errors

When Jam gets his foot stuck in the bullworker, which also has the foot of the bed stuck in it, he pulls on his foot, and the other side of the bullworker releases and hits him in the face. If the bullworker was really stuck on the bed, the bed would have to have been lifted up for the other side to release.
Mr. Johansen's newspaper has a headline regarding the Jonestown Massacre and is dated 13 October 1978. But the Jonestown Massacre didn't happen until 17 November 1978.
In the end credits for musical listings, for the songs by the band UFO, singer Phil Mogg's last name is misspelled (as "Moog.")
In the entire movie, the concert was to take place at COBO Hall, which is a banquet hall, and a KISS concert was never performed at COBO Hall. To be correct the concert should have taken place at COBO Arena, right next door.

Incorrectly regarded as goofs

At the restaurant where Beth is eating with her parents there is a cruet of vinegar on the table. This in uncommon in most of the United States, but it is common in Canada where vinegar on french fries is quite common. However, with Detroit's proximity to Canada, it's not out of the realm of believability.
After Hawk knee's Kenny in the face, Hawk pulls a lit cigarette out of nowhere.

There is a deleted scene of Hawk and Kenny arguing and in the deleted scene, Hawk lights a cigarette before he knees Kenny in the crotch.

Revealing mistakes

On the comic book rack in the convenience store, the "Masters of Kung Fu" Marvel Comic has a price of "12p," indicating this version of the comic was made for sale in the UK market.

Miscellaneous

In the convenience store scene, a kid with KISS styled make-up on his face is playing with the KISS pinball machine. As this movie is set in 1978, the KISS pinball machine wasn't introduced until July of the following year by Bally.
Kenny, Bobby and their girlfriends are singing Makin' It by David Naughton in the car. The movie is set in 1978, and, Makin' It wasn't a hit until 1979.

Anachronisms

In the garage scene at the start of the movie, Trip is seen playing a guitar that was not released until 1996.
When the boys first arrive in Detroit, as they are driving in a group of cars there are a few 1990's cars in the background that are visible.
As the guys arrive in Detoit for the concert, a Barry Sanders Detroit Lions wall mural can be seen among the cityscape shots. He didn't play for the Lions until 1989.
When the boys are headed into Detroit, they're supposedly coming in from Cleveland, but they're seen heading into Detroit via the Belle Isle Bridge. The Belle Isle Bridge is already in Detroit.
The pink pizza delivery vehicle at the convent is a Russian Lada Niva which was never sold in the United States and only started to be imported into Canada after 1979.

Audio/visual unsynchronised

When the mother picks up the record from the turntable she is looking at Side 2 of the KISS album, "Love Gun". "I Stole Your Love", the song that almost blows her through the chair, is the first song of Side 1.
When Mystery is playing "Rock And Roll All Night", and Hawk sings/screams "crazy", the word ends, and yet, he is still clearly saying it.
Before they meet up with the disco fans, they are listening to "Shout It Out Loud", which is on "Destroyer", but Bobby throws "Love Gun" out of the car.
Right before Kenny and Bobby pull the boys out of the car, the camera shows Christine blowing a bubble with her gum. But, when Kenny and Bobby are shown again, you can clearly hear Christine's bubble pop.

Crew or equipment visible

(around 40 min) The camera crew is briefly reflected on the gang's car as they drive through Detroit.
(around 1 hr. and 1 min.) While a drunk Hawk attempts a male stripping contest, one shot within the crowds shows a cameraman in the foreground.
Camera shadows visible on the main singer, during the basement hangout sequence.

Errors in geography

When the boys are seen driving into Detroit, they are driving across a bridge into the city. The only bridges into Detroit come from Canada and Belle Isle, neither of which would be possible for them.

Plot holes

Although Trip attempts to rob the convenience store to pay the kid and his brother so he won't get beaten up. But a real robbery happens and Trip saves the day and he gets $150 rewarded for stopping the robbery. He could've avoided the kid and his brother and ran out to find a scalper to buy a KISS ticket.
After Trip gets a $150 reward from the store after stopping the robbery. He could've went to a scalper to buy a ticket instead of paying the kid and his brother.

Boom mic visible

Reflected in the mirror at the end of the "girl's restroom" scene on upper left side of screen (theatrical version only - for the home video release, the mike was digitally erased from the shot).

Character error

When Father McNulty is choking on a 'shroom, he fills his glass with liquid from a decanter. However, his glass was already half-full.
Jam was still wearing the ugly clothes his mom had him wear after his friends break him out of the catholic school but when they're on the highway. Jam is wearing his denim jacket and jeans a t-shirt. There's no way they drove back to Cleveland to have Jam go home and change and it's not even possible that the guys had a change of clothes for him. They might have.
