Watch this one for the laughs.
ChuckStraub25 June 2006
Stupid scenes, bad acting, poor dialogue, lots of topless scenes. Liana (Analía Ivars) is the heroine and main character of the movie. You'll be seeing a lot of her. She'll be running around topless throughout the whole movie. Amazons kill her gold hungry missionary parents and Liana is raised in the jungle away from civilization. Although she does seem to find a way to maintain a perm. When she matures, Liana decides she has to avenge her parent's death and with an odd assortment of characters she picks up on her quest, she goes after the Amazons. Not that hard a task. I don't recall seeing more than 7 in any scene. The movie has lots of nudity, violence, but no real gore. There are some scenes that if it wasn't for the nudity, you might think it was a children's film. It's a very cheaply made film with lots of mistakes. The more you question things, the worse it gets. For me, this was one of those it's so bad it's good movies. It's entertaining in a humorous way. Not to be taken seriously. Wait until you meet the witch doctor Koukou. Watch this one for the laughs.

There is really only one reason to watch this . . .
winterpage6 September 2007
Warning: Spoilers
. . . and that is only if you like the sight of beautiful woman with nice, bouncy jugs running around the so called African jungle. So no problems there for most males out there.

I watched it as one of those bundled together package. Forget about the plot which is essentially just a flimsy storyline to get our heroine flashing her jugs on screen at every opportunity possible. Just to give you a sense, our heroine swings from vine to vine and climb on top animals at every chance possible for no good reason at all just to let you see her jugs at all angles. Again, no complaints.

The "fight scenes" are laughable and borderline on the pornographic. Our heroine got caught by the baddies at least five times in the movie. On occasions when she has to fight, the "fighting" involves rolling around in the dirt, grunting unconvincingly and basically fighting like kittens. I am surprised no hair pulling is involved. It get so bad that the chief baddie had to remind the "combatants" that "I said, the one that draw first blood wins!" in order to avoid watching anymore stupid fighting.

The witch doctor Kuku was a bloody blast. From being a big, cuddly bear in the beginning, he became manic depressive when captured and then, outright psycho. He spent the whole movie muttering lines with no irrelevance.

Beside Liana (our heroine)bouncing around topless, you also get to see plenty of other Amazonians as well as one woman who decided to jump naked into the lake to take a swim for no good reasons. Yeah, it is that kind of movie.

Watch the beautiful Liane in her bouncy glory. Despite the movie being more than 20 years old, the allure of watching blond women flashing their nice jugs on screen never gets old.

Amusing in its own absurd way.
Hey_Sweden15 February 2021
A missionary named Simpson (Jean-Rene Gossart) becomes hungry for gold, and he and his wife pay the price when targeted by tough-as-nails, topless Amazonian babes. Their daughter is raised in the jungle, away from civilization, and grows up to be a "Sheena" type named Liana (Analia Ivars), albeit one with an impressive perm. As an adult, Liana decides that the time is ripe for revenge, and accompanied by characters like an archaeologist, his hot-to-trot wife, a witch doctor, and a jungle guide, she treks into the land of the "blue mountain" where a golden temple does indeed await.

Officially directed by Alain Payet, with uncredited work by "presenter" Jess Franco (who also wrote the screenplay), this is no great example of the jungle adventure genre popularized by the Italians. There's not much gore, no cannibalism, and other than the nudity, there's nothing that would be highly objectionable to a mainstream audience. Overall, the movie delivers *some* entertainment, at least for the viewer who can't get enough of this sort of thing. All the acting, dubbing, and set design tend towards the utterly cheesy; much of the dialogue is rather unintelligible, although that's probably no real loss. The electronic music score by Norbert Verrone is overbearing.

Despite the title, this clearly takes place in Africa, and there are admittedly some very cute scenes near the beginning of Liana interacting with the wildlife - chatting with a giraffe, hitching a ride on an elephant, etc. (The animal sequences are actually pretty good.) And there is also a fairly well trained chimp who the human characters call "Rocky". Of the main cast members, Eva Leon appears to be having the most fun, playing the evil, sadistic, eyepatch-wearing Rena. Co-starring are familiar faces such as William Berger, Antonio Mayans, and Olivier Mathot. Francos' wife Lina Romay has an uncredited bit as a temple guard.

If you're looking for an 85-minute cheese fest that won't get too unpleasant and won't tax your brain, "Golden Temple Amazons" kills time in a passable way.

Jess Franco goes to the zoo for some family fun
lazarillo26 March 2007
I am now the proud owner of 26 Jess Franco movies, and after buying this one (as part of the Shriek Show "Jungle Girls" set), I think it may be time to admit I have a problem and seek out the proper 12-step group.

A young girls is orphaned after her missionary parents are murdered by the titular (or should that be tit-ular?) Amazons. She decides to seek revenge (but not of course until she has matured into a sexy teenage Analia Ivers with large, succulent, and perpetually exposed breasts). With her pet monkey, a cartoonish African witch doctor, and some greedy explorers she sets off to find the Golden Temple of the Amazons. Although this is supposedly set in Africa and everyone else is black, the Amazons are all Nordic blonde girls for some reason. And in what is not exactly a blow for feminism, the legendary tribe of females has a male leader--a fat, middle-aged white guy who does little more than stage half-naked catfights and then rape the winner.

Franco fans are, of course, used to this kind of inanity--but even they are not used to this level of incompetent film-making. Frankly, this looks someone's home movies shot at the zoo after Dad has had a few too many beers (albeit with Mom and Big Sis taking their tops off a lot). It's also surprisingly tame--producer Daniel Lesseur even claims that it was supposed to be a family film! While I would never expose MY children to this kind of rampant nudity, bad taste, and incompetent film-making, he's right in that this certainly doesn't make it as an adult movie in any sense of the word. There is a hilarious scene where the older female explorer (let's call her "Mom")goes skinny-dipping and discovers a cave which she proceeds to explores without, you know, actually putting her clothes back on. Mostly though it's more smutty than erotic, such as the scene where the male explorer, played by a gray-bearded Anthony Mayans, is straddling the barely dressed, barely legal heroine as they ride an elephant and lasciviously tells her that he really isn't interested in being her father. Yep, fun for the whole family alright.

Remember the first step is to admit that we are powerless over Franco and that his films have become unwatchable.

Um ... the DVD cover art is really beautiful!
Coventry25 December 2008
Wow, I swear this has never happened to me before…. I only watched "Golden Temple Amazons" yesterday and already I haven't got the slightest recollection of anything that happened in this film. That's how brilliant this movie is, I guess! By now I only remember being lured into watching it because of the incredibly attractive DVD cover art, showing a torrid drawing of a voluptuous Amazon preparing her bow to fire at an unspecified target. I often get fooled by appealing DVD covers – especially Jess Franco ones – and I still haven't learned to resist even after literally hundreds of awful experiences. Oh well… After reading the other user-comments, some parts of my memory returned although I still suspect to confuse this film with another Jess Franco masterpiece I watched the day before, namely "Diamonds of the Kilimanjaro" (and, yes, that one had an awesome DVD cover as well).

"Golden Temple Amazons" opens with a posse of hot white African Amazons – I am aware of the contradiction but don't blame me – slaughtering the parents of a fragile young girl because they were trespassing the turf with the intention of stealing the golden treasures from the temple. Several years and hormonal changes later, the girl returns to the jungle to get her revenge. She's accompanied by a bunch of sleazy adventurers who are less interested in the act of vengeance but wouldn't mind taking some gold back home. The rudimentary premise is obviously secondary to all the showcasing of ravishing female nudity and gratuitous sleaze. Analía Ivars, Eva Léon and the other nameless Amazons are all regular Franco choices and willingly walk around with their breasts proudly exposed. You better enjoy gazing at all these perfect female curves, as the rest of "Golden Temple Amazons" is a boring and incompetent mess. There's hardly any violence or action and no less than half of the film is pure filler, bits and pieces of National Geographic documentaries edited into the story and that sort of stuff. The awesome DVD cover would definitely be a great addition to your collection, but opening the box is utter pointless.

CLOTHING NOT OPTIONAL
kirbylee70-599-52617924 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I have to admit up front that I've never been a fan of director Jess Franco aka Jesús Franco Manera. I understand that he has a huge fan following who flocked to his movies when they were released and who collect his films on first VHS and now disc willing to pluck down big bucks to own everything the man ever directed (which is quite a bit since IMDB lists him as having directed over 204 films). For some reason I have yet to find a movie I've been exposed to of his that would inspire me to join the ranks of those fans. But different strokes for different folks, right?

With GOLDEN TEMPLE OF AMAZONS Franco does what he does best which if find an attractive woman to star in his film and have her wear as little as possible. This time around the story involves a pair of missionaries who are killed by a tribe of scantily clad blonde warriors leaving behind their young daughter Liana Simpson (Analia Ivars) to fend for herself. Fifteen years later a friend of the family arrives with his group in search of a treasure in gold the girl's father had found. She agrees to help the group and get revenge against those who killed her parents.

It turns out the warrior women are led by a maniacal priest, Uruck the Temple Guardian (William Berger). He seems more interested in pleasuring himself with whoever he finds than actually worrying about protecting the gold. His right hand woman is an eyepatch wearing warrior who is jealous of our heroine and sets out to kill her if possible. More scantily clad women, more fights to the death and a raucous battle for the gold follow before the end credits roll.

Let me say once more I know there are fans of Franco out there who love every piece of film he shot, every story he told and every movie he was able to get produced. And they can be entertaining enough when accepted for what they are which is quickly shot and guaranteed to make a buck on the exploitation film circuit. But if you're looking for deep stories or high quality acting then a Franco film is not where you should be looking.

The movie has a haze to it even in this pristine version brought to us by the folks at MVD who have done their best to make it look great. But even that can't make the movie any better than it is. On the other hand if what you're looking for is a glimpse of bare breasts then this movie is right up your alley. It's one of those films that pre-teens would stay up late to glimpse on Cinemax back in the day eager for their first look at a bare breast.

As part of their MVD Classics series the movie IS a classic in that all movies that have been made deserve to be treated fondly and with affection for those who seek them out and who want to find them in the best version possible. With that in mind they've done a good job for fans of Franco. If you're one of them then by all means pick this one up. The same goes if you're curious to find out what the fans of Franco enjoy so much. It also would be a good pick up for fans of the old T&A drive in fare from the glory days of the 70s and 80s.

No. Just don't.
I_Ailurophile4 June 2023
It says so, so much about this film that it was originally a production helmed by infamous Spanish schlock maestro Jesús Franco. How much of the finished work reflects Franco's original vision, such as it may have been, and how much reflects adaptation by Georges Friedland and completion by Alain Payet, is an interesting question, and one to which I don't have the answer. It also doesn't matter, however, because I'm sure the end result would not have meaningfully differed. From the very first minutes we're treated to very tiresome and very gratuitous nudity, awful acting, terrible direction, excruciating dialogue, sometimes questionable cinematography, bland and repetitive music, recycled shots, racist tropes, hideous editing, scene and narrative writing that would be laughable if they weren't so wretchedly bad, and costume design, hair, and makeup that are just plain dubious. From the very first minutes this is weak, thin, flimsy, unconvincing, exhausting, aggravating, and in all other ways rotten, and I've barely scraped the surface of all the necessary criticism. Please, please take a word of advice from someone who will watch anything, who approached this out of a sense of curiosity, and who deeply regrets her decision: 'Les amazones du temple d'or,' or 'Golden Temple Amazons,' is completely without value, and no one should watch it.

Franco wasn't exactly known as a master filmmaker, but at least some of his pictures ranged from good to earnestly enjoyable. Was this a misfire from the time he first conceived of it? Were his other works a lucky mistake? Was Payet an astoundingly poor filmmaker himself, or was he just following Franco's lead to the letter? I think these are all very reasonable things to ponder, but in this instance we readily have at least part of an answer. One quick glance at other titles credited to Payet show that he mostly made his living off of pornography of one level or another. This isn't to say that filmmakers in the adult entertainment sector can't possess real skill, but it's safe to say that quality varies wildly, and there's also a world of difference between XXX videos and the production of full-length features. Or at least, there usually is; one way or another, given all the nudity that the camera lingers upon here - not to mention consistent dashes of misogyny, and the otherwise meager, floundering nature of the project - it's fairly evident that Payet approached this 1986 dumpster fire as little more than another one of his skin flicks. If one was feeling generous perhaps one could posit that the man just wasn't taking this seriously in any measure.

Is there anything of worth here? Anything at all? Certainly not the characters, bearing no intelligence as they are written and being unlikable from one to the next. Certainly not the notes of patriarchy, redefining the Amazonian mythology. I guess the filming locations are nice, and some aspects of the sets are half okay. Excessive as it is, the footage of animals is a welcome, brief, irregular diversion. And if nothing else about 'Les amazones du temple d'or' is true, we viewers will revel in the fact of the short runtime of less than ninety minutes. I'll even grant that in fairness, there are faint shades throughout of what might have been good ideas, thoughts that might have been shaped into a more appreciable B-movie in someone else's hands. Yet the unwavering truth is that this film, as we see it, is absolute, unremitting rubbish from top to bottom. Incredibly, I have actually seen titles that were even worse, but let's be perfectly honest, at this level the distinction is totally meaningless. Once more, I beg of you: however it is you came across this picture, whatever it is you think you'll get out of it, it's garbage that deserves to be forgotten. Anything else is far more worth your time, and will offer whatever it is you thought you'd find here and won't. You've been warned.

Might be the worst movie ever made
wolfjflywheel-374805 December 2020
How many natural blondes are found in the heart Africa? By the way Amazons are the imaginary race of women native to South America .he cliches are too numerous to mention. Is it just me or did any one else find it strange the the girl that survived is running around in a loin cloth, when her mother's clothes were available? Also her outfit had three strategically placed animal tails to partially cover her breasts. At 30 minutes into the movie I had to stop. Dialogue and acting is sloppy. The only positive aspect is that none of the women in the movie appear to be cosmetically enhanced.

I'm the master now, and we're gonna have...fun
movieman_kev20 February 2005
From the directors Alain Payet and an uncredited Jess Franco comes this exploitive film about topless Amazonian babes who pillage and kill a young girl's parents. Years go by, and the girl now a woman by the name of Liana (Jess Fronco regular, Analia Ivars), along with some new found friends, has to fight the Amazon babes out of revenge. Bad acting, campy dialog, topless women, and a very silly story collide to make this one of Franco's more watchable efforts of his more recent output. It has way to much stock footage of wildlife animals though, so take of that what you will.

My Grade: B-

DVD Extras: Photo Gallery; useless Alternate Scenes; Interview with Eurocine's Daniel Lasoeur; Promo Trailer; Trailers for "Nightmares come at midnight", "Faceless", "Massacre in Dinosaur Valley", and "Man from Deep River"

Eye Candy: all the women in the film remain topless, and one gets completely nude

Cheaper Then Cheap
bemyfriend-4018425 March 2021
Beyond bad; and cheaper than cheap. Insulting. Ugly. Sick. The nubile beauty who seems to be the heroine is beautiful enough. But this movie is like putting a kitten into a blender. Sad. Watched the girl in the petting zoo; then gave up. What made it so bad? A bunch of women in the nude. And sadly, they shouldn't be. Stereotypical characters, predictable, tedious.

Holy smokes this movies amazing!!!!!!
blackdeath2118 October 2007
Wow, this movies unbelievable. First of all the plot is insane. This girls family is killed by an Amazon tribe and when she grows up seeks revenge on the tribe. Thats were sanity ends. Now its time for the insane. The female Amazon warriors are played by Scandinavian white women, whose chief is a fat old man, who don't live in the Amazon, their in Africa. Confused much, I was but I just decided to go with it.

The heroine of the story, Liana, meets many people on her travels. An African witch doctor who seemed to be Italian. The only true Africans were only seen in passing.

The "Golden Temple" looked so cheap, the walls looked as if they taped gold tin-foil to them. The chiefs chambers were obviously filmed in some ones house. Even though the temple is made out of stone and rock the chamber floors look like marble and the ceiling has a lavish design on them.

The greatest part of the movie were all the BOOBIES!! Oh glorious boobies. Every scene seemed to be filled with nothing but boobies, you couldn't hide from them. 82 minutes of BOOBIES!! So to wrap things up, everyone makes the statement "so bad it was good" and this movie definitely fits the mold. If your poison is weird "C" level movies that don't make a bit of sense, then this movies for you.

Oh, did I mention all the glorious Boobies!!

The Tarzan girl
liodavix27 March 2019
A curious and almost unknown adventure movie.

Directed jointly by the French director Alain Payet and the Spanish Jesús Franco, this French production can be defined as a simple B-series adventure film with the greatest incentive of seeing the aforementioned semi-nude Amazonas in the middle of a script whose simplicity and lack of depth does not prevent him from being entertained.

The story, basically, an adaptation of Tarzan in female, that of a young girl whose parents were killed by a savage tribe of Amazons, led by a mysterious leader whom they follow and worship as a god. The girl grows in the middle of a wild environment, raised by the family steward and with a monkey as best friend and that after running into a missionary, who will confess the truth about their parents will decide to go in search of revenge.

However, along the way you will run into a shaman from an African tribe with magic tricks and a couple of archaeologists who will accompany you in your journey through the jungle to the Golden Temple of the Amazons.

The film, mostly of scenes, is accompanied by a series of melodies set perhaps to disguise the lack of dialogue, giving the film a clearly dreamlike tone.

The lack of budget is more than evident, but they all supplement with wonderful natural settings, and a temple that is not badly made, the story simple, but clear, the girl the Spanish actress Analía Ivars is beautiful, and together, her Good photography and good rhythm make it an entertaining and pleasant product to see without a doubt.

Amazon-level bad
BandSAboutMovies24 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Alain Payet - working under the name James Gartner* - mostly worked in adult films and supposedly directed this, but a few minutes in and you realize that no, you're watching another Jess Franco movie, which is even more apparent when you realize that even though he didn't put his name on as a director, he used two aliases for writing (story by Jeff Manner, screenplay by A.L. Mariaux) and Lina Romay shows up as one of the Amazon guards.

Man, this movie is - as is obvious - a mess, but it's also about Liana Simpson (Analía Ivars, Panther Squad, Franco's Lust for Frankenstein), whose parents were killed by the Golden Temple Amazons - we get to watch it more than once - and she was raised by the creatures of the jungle before getting her chimp Rocky and a witch doctor named Koukou (Stanley Kapoul, who is also in The Perils of Gwendoline in the Land of the Yik-Yak, which is a much better movie of the same genre).

There's also Antonio Mayans (who was in Revenge of the Alligator Girls and directed its sequel), William Berger in a loincloth, Emilio Linder from Christina and Monster Dog, Alicia Príncipe (The Erotic Story of O) and Eva León (Blue Eyes of the Broken Doll, Bahía Blanca) as Rena, the leader of the Amazons, who has an all gold everything matchy matchy fashion ensemble.

There's also the same deathtrap from Erotic Rites of Frankenstein, so this has that going for it.

Look - you're gonna like Jess Franco or you're going to be bored into insanity or if you're me, you're going to zone out and use his movies to improve your positive mental attitude and use his tics - long pauses, plenty of scenery, a near-total disregard for how to tell a story - to get closer to Nirvana. Join me, I guess.

*On Letterboxd, Kyle Faulkner drops some science on me by stating how Payet came on board when Eurocine bought this movie, took a bunch of Franco footage to reedit and added shots of women on horseback. This actually played theaters, which is destroying my brain.

Jungle romps with Jess Franco.
parry_na31 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Liana (a very young looking Joan Virly) meets Johnstone (Olivier Mathot, who had starred as Morpho in Jess Franco's 'Revenge in the House of Usher' three years earlier, amongst other things), an elderly gent who always takes care to speak v-e-r-y -s-l-o-w-l-y to the scantily-clad, 80s perm-sporting young Tarzan-esque outcast. Virly - real name Analía Ivars - returned to the crazy world of Jess Franco ten years later, for various One Shot Productions. Back to the story, and Johnstone relates to Lianna the story of how her father (Jean-René Gossart) came to these unchartered lands in search of gold, only to come a cropper courtesy of the blond Amazonian tribe that dwell there.

If you never tire of topless young females riding on horses and elephants, often in slow motion and accompanied by the plastic soundtrack of 1980s synth-pop, then you will find lots of enjoy in Alain Payet and Franco's Eurocine jungle romp. We are treated to the sight of the inevitable death of Liana's parents twice before the first twenty minutes are up, in order to show how the (then) little girl was taken and raised by tribesmen. On hearing this story, Liana vows to take revenge on those ruthless Amazonians.

In true jarring style, scenes of tension are followed by delightful images of Liana's comfortable relationship with various jungle animals, particularly Rocky the chimpanzee. The plot, the locations and the ethnicity of various characters soon become ever more muggy. But would you really expect anything else? One of the highlights, apart from the nudity, is the performance of Stanley Capoul as KouKou the shaman, which enlivens proceedings a great deal. He becomes a friend to Liana, and the two of them develop a genuinely delightful relationship for a time. Antonio Mayans also shows up as 'Bud', and lends the small role his customary gravitas. Prolific actress and Jean Rollin's 'Living Dead Girl' Françoise Blanchard is on hand as a blond Amazon woman.

This could be viewed as 'Franco does Indiana Jones', and various tricks are undertaken to give the impression of a bigger budget (see if you can sport them), but this is of course, cheap and cheerful stuff. Liana has a punishing time, especially towards the end, and there is a sadistic whipping scene identical to that employed in Franco's 'Erotic Rites of Frankenstein' ten years earlier. Some of the dubbed dialogue here is interesting. Try this one: "Women's liberation even in the jungle, eh? To me, you're just a female and very pretty."

I enjoyed this in all its scatty, occasionally brutal glory. If you're a Franco fan, you probably will too.

An enjoyably goofy trekking through the jungle action/adventure romp
Woodyanders28 November 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Orphaned as a little girl after a tribe of evil topless Amazons kill her parents, feisty Liana (comely, shapely brunette hottie supreme Analia Ivars) grows up to be a sort of perky distaff Tarzan. Liana joins an expedition to find a fortress that's built on top of a gold mine. Naturally, the expedition members run afoul of the evil Amazon tribe that's led by nefarious high priest Uruck (an amusingly stolid William Berger) and his cruel, wicked mistress Rena (ripely essayed with fiendish relish by Eva Leon, who sports a black eyepatch and little else). Competently directed with a reasonable amount of flair by Alain Payat and an uncredited Jess Franco, this flick has all the right junky ingredients to pass muster as an entertainingly trashy affair: copious gratuitous nudity (the sumptuously slinky Alicia Principe is especially notable in this department; her skinny-dipping scene is a definite highlight of the movie), an endearingly hackneyed script by George Freeland, mild violence, a fat, bald, bumbling comic relief witch doctor named Koukou (the hilarious Stanley Koupal), crisp photography by Henry Frogers, torture, breathtakingly beautiful jungle scenery, rape, a bouncy, throbbing rock score by Norbert Verrone, lousy acting, choice campy dialogue ("Evil ghost close gate of hell!"), a snappy pace, poor dubbing, an ineptly staged bat attack, and an excellent knock-down, drag-out no-holds-barred cat fight between Liana and Rena. Alas, the topless Amazon women on horseback are a decidedly mixed bag: Some are hot; most are not. That minor quibble aside, this picture overall provides a good deal of goofy fun.
