Van Beuren beat Disney into synchronized sound cartoons by several months -- even though they were both four years behind the Fleischer Brothers -- and even though they were much more conservative in their techniques once they had made their breakthrough, they still produced some good black and white cartoons. This is one of them.
It's a straight musical involving a barbershop quartet of alley cats and some dogs summoned from the pound to quiet them to little success. The animation and visual gags are simple and old fashioned, but the aural gags are nicely done and even if there's little coordination between the animation and the music -- indeed, Van Beuren would still continue to turn out this primitive sort of sound cartoon for another three years -- it's still very well done for 1930 and nice for today.
