- James Forbes, a Congressman with high political ambitions, lives at Washington with Marion, his wife, and daughter, Ada. Ada, deeply in love with Eugene Cory, a composer, from whom she is receiving vocal instruction, is about to become engaged to him. Forbes' nomination for senator is strongly opposed by "Boss" Stapleton, Cory's rival for Ada's hand. Alice Woods, another pupil of Cory, under mental stress, confesses her love for him. Cory sympathetically tells her of his impending engagement to Ada Forbes. To further his political ambition, Forbes prevents Ada's engagement to Cory, and urges his daughter to marry Stapleton. The latter, in appreciation, gives Forbes the nomination for senator. Cory, disillusioned, attempts to shoot himself. Alice, arriving for her lesson, Slavs his hand. She again declares her sincere love for him. He eventually marries Alice. The married life of Ada and Stapleton proves a failure, Ada lavishes all her affection on her adopted daughter, Beatrice. Cory, living with his wife in New York, has achieved success. Alice, childless, devotes here time to charity. The premiere of Cory's opera is followed by a reception in his honor, given by one of the leaders of Washington's "smart set." Here Ada again meets Cory; they realize that they are both mismated, that love cannot be bought nor sold, that the only price of love is love. Arriving home late that night, Stapleton quarrels with Ada, telling her that "old memories are haunting her again," and strikes her. Seeking consolation, Ada goes to New York. She is met by Cory who provides a home for her in an apartment hotel on Riverside Drive. Alice and her sister, Stella, who is about to be married, are seeking a furnished apartment. They call at the hotel. The clerk obtains permission from Ada to inspect her apartment. Here Alice sees a photo of Cory, and demands from Ada, "Who is this man?" Confusedly, Ada answers, "Why, that's my husband." Alice collapses, and Ada, realizing her plight, confesses the truth. Alice for the first time learns that Ada is unfortunate and instead of condemning her, Alice gives Ada her sympathy, and offers any help she may desire, but Ada refuses on the ground that the sacrifice must be made by her. She asks Alice to go home, and promises never again to meet Cory. That afternoon, Cory pays a visit to Ada, and she implores him to leave her forever. Grieved over the separation from her sweetheart, parents and child, Ada reads in a newspaper that her mother is on her deathbed. That evening, Alice receives a telephone message from Ada saying, "I'm going back. Forgive -" and then silence, and a crash. Alice and Cory hasten to Ada's apartment, and find the stricken woman in a state of collapse. Cory summons a physician, while Alice tenderly nurses Ada. At midnight, Alice and Cory leave her bedside, in charge of a nurse. Ada awakens, eludes her nurse, and wanders to the bank of the river. Overwhelmed by the hopelessness of her love she enters the swirling waters. Gradually the icy stream engulfs her, extinguishing the last spark of the immortal flame of her great love.—Moving Picture World synopsis
