Synopsis

  • Pitamber Chaudhri (A. K. Hangal), headmaster of a school in Madhupur, India, has a daughter named Geeta (Zarina Wahab). Geeta is a typical village belle - naive, childish, and always in the company of a little boy who is her neighbor Deepu (Master Raju). Chaubey (Shail Chaturvedi) is an official of the village, and the village has a single postman (CS Dubey).

Pitamber's older daughter, Meera (Ritu Kamal), who lives in Mumbai, informs Pitamber of the arrival of a young engineer who could be a possible match for Geeta. Pitamber is asked to welcome him and treat him well. An airy bungalow and freedom to roam around with Geeta since he is of a progressive mentality. The engineer likes flowers. Meera says in her letter that the boy might want to test his compatibility with Geeta and hence there should be no objection to them meeting each other, even in private.

Without further question, Pitamber and family do just that when the visitor arrives by train. The engineer is arriving to build a bridge on the Madhupur river and earns Rs 2000/month. He has studied in Germany. The engineer is coming to the village to replace an Executive Engineer who is getting transferred. Geeta is a bit young and hence is still a little immature. Geeta is also instructed to act demurely in front of her potential husband, but she makes fun of her mother's rules.

Vinod (Amol Palekar), the newcomer, takes an instant liking to Pitamber. Pitamber receives Vinod at the railway station, but never asks his name or his identity. He simply assumes that Vinod is the man that Meera mentioned in her letter. Pitamber also loves it that Vinod is not at all arrogant or airy-fairy. He is down to earth, sweet and affable. Pitambar and his wife (Dina Pathak) invite Vinod over the tea. Geeta delivers the invitation and meets Vinod for the first time. It is clear that Geeta doesn't share Vinod's taste in music. As Vinod talks about his passion for music, Geeta is either yawning or loses interest in the conversation or is simply plain distracted.

Vinod is puzzled by Geeta's moms' affections towards him. Geeta's mother has prepared a full spread of evening snacks for Vinod and says that Geeta has cooked everything. She shows Vinod a lot of embroidery work & paintings in the house and again adds that Geeta has done all of this. But he learns that Geeta couldn't learn music because she didn't have a harmonium. Geeta's mother asks Geeta to deliver a bouquet of flowers daily to Vinod.

In the middle of everything, Vinod has a conversation with his assistant that the senior engineer has gone to Delhi and hence could not come to Madhupur.

Vinod loves the family and Geeta in particular, even teaching her to sing by buying her a harmonium. They spend a lot of time together, unsupervised and even have long walks in the village. Things move quickly as Vinod gets an official jeep and uses that to take Geeta for long drives together. They both start liking each other. His actions are construed as his love for Geeta by her parents.

The family begins to talk about the possibility of Vinod and Geeta marrying. Life is good until another letter from Meera arrives. Pitamber is shocked to read that the engineer whom Meera was sending to meet the family has not yet arrived but will be coming soon. Vinod is an overseer who happened to come early, as his boss was delayed and could not make it as planned. Pitambar cannot fault Vinod as he and his wife never even asked his name. Meera had told them that the name of the engineer is Sunil.

The family is disappointed. They ask Geeta to stop seeing Vinod and turn her attention to Sunil (Vijayendra Ghatge), the engineer, but Geeta cannot forget Vinod. Meanwhile Vinod, who is completely oblivious to this dynamic happily introduces Sunil to the entire family and tells Sunil everything that he has learned about Geeta in the last week. The flowers that were delivered daily to Vinod, now get sent to Sunil. Sunil is invited for dinner, But Vinod is innocent and believes he is also invited and tags along. Pitamber's wife doesn't know how to convey the misunderstanding to Vinod. Vinod still believes that Geeta's family loves him and wants him to wed Geeta in the next few weeks.

Sunil invites Vinod for a picnic with Geeta. Thats the first time he suspects that Geeta and Vinod have feelings for each other. Sunil asks Vinod if he should marry Geeta. Vinod is stunned. Vinod speaks to Geeta alone and learns the truth that the family was waiting for Sunil and mistook him for Sunil. He wishes Geeta all the best for her journey with Sunil.

Sunil is fond of Geeta and agrees to the engagement, which is quickly arranged. When Vinod hears of the engagement, he prepares to leave the village before the ceremony. Upon hearing this, Geeta insists that she will marry Vinod, against the wishes of her family. She rushes to the train station but not before the train leaves. Disheartened, she turns back and is received and driven back to her house by Sunil. To her surprise, Vinod is at the house. All misconceptions have been cleared up: Geeta and Vinod are to be engaged.
