This was pretty funny; better than I expected. Sometimes I underrate these Harvey cartoons because the transfer isn't "restored" or the leading characters aren't anyone I'm familiar with, but they still wind up entertaining.
Here, the contest is between some dopey cat with a funny accent and a blackbird who sounds like "Rochester" of Jack Benny fame.
The cat can't sleep."This not being able to sleep is keeping me awake," he says.Very profound.
He reads a book about insomnia, strikes out after the first idea doesn't work but then reads that eating a blackbird will make his sleep. Conveniently, there's one atop a big bird house outside his window. The next thing you know, our cat is making himself a sandwich, but this blackbird is no dummy and talks the cat into other trying other things, all of which cause disaster.
Jackson Beck, who voiced "Buzzy" (or "Buzz") was famous, voicing "Bluto" in over 300 Popeye cartoons among other noteworthy career achievements.
This is solid material, with a lot of the lines in humorous rhyme, lots of puns and plenty of good sight gags. It's definitely recommended.
