Lavish Rather than Scotch
This very early Terrytoons about the goings-on at a race -- the nominal Scottish provenance is indicated by elephants wearing plaid -- is lavishly drawn for a Paul Terry production -- enormous detail, lots of good backgrounding and a complete absence of typical transformation and objects-coming-alive gags. Instead there is a far more situational humor, eked out by well-constructed sight gags.
Frankly, I'm flabbergasted. Paul Terry produced cartoons for forty years and prospered by watching his pennies. Perhaps he was feeling ambitious at the moment, having just broken away from the grueling schedule of producing a cartoon a week for Van Beuren. Perhaps Educational Pictures, who were releasing him at the moment, wanted to make a big splash in sound films and were still flush. Whatever the reason, this is a fine Terrytoon for the period and a good one at any time.
