In the early 1920s, Krazy Kat was the most popular cartoon character in films. It remained that way during much of the decade. But by 1929, the Kat had fallen on bad times....and most of them seem avoidable when you look at them today. Back in the early days, what made the Krazy Kat cartoons so enjoyable was that Krazy was a jerk. He was NOT lovable nor especially nice. He was clever and funny. And, in "Port Whines" you see none of his old cleverness or humor. Instead, it looks as if the studio is trying to make a copy, of sorts, of "Steamboat Willie"...a film that came out a year earlier AND was better made. In this one, the song "Pop Goes the Weasel" is played and Krazy acts out along with the music. Not clever, not original...just acceptable, at best, and a shadow of the funny guy he used to be. Oh, and if you are wondering, the character only got less funny as time went on!
