Charming, funny short from UPA's Jolly Frolics series
llltdesq11 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This is a one shot short from the UPA studio. There will be spoilers ahead:

This is an exceptionally cute cartoon done by UPS about a Scottish boy named Georgie and a dragon he meets. Georgie very much wants a pet, but his father, a rather dour fellow, is adamantly opposed to a pet of any kind, instead saying the only thing the boy needs is "responsibility".

Georgie brings the dragon home, hides him and asks his father to let him have a pet. His father says no and remains totally oblivious to the increasingly obvious signs of a growing dragon in his home.

Most of the short centers around the potential hazards of having a dragon who breathes fire around a small family home. Neither of Georgie's parents even notices the dragon, though the mother thinks Georgie should have a pet. I suspect Georgie could just bring a pet home, remain silent and his parents would never even notice! Georgie finally gets a now huge dragon out of the cottage and sadly sends him off. His father relents in the end and tells Georgie he can have a pet. The ending is hilarious and should be seen to be fully appreciated.

This short is on a three disc DVD box set of UPA Jolly Frolics shorts. The short is very good and the set itself is excellent. Most recommended.

VERY funny; don't miss it!

Quite simply one of the funniest cartoons ever made. When young Georgie brings home a baby dragon, his mother takes it in stride, but Georgie's highly excitable father is another matter, and he and the dragon just can't stay out of each other's way. This little comic gem is way overdue for re-discovery on video; what's taking Columbia Pictures so long?!
