The Urdu poet par excellence Shahryar whose lines resonated across Hindi cinema when he worked with Muzaffar Ali in Gaman, Umrao Jaan and Anjuman is no more. Shabana Azmi who sang all the songs of Anjuman expresses the highest regard for Shahryar's poetic aptitudes. Says Shabana, "He was the best Ghazal poet in present times. The words that he wrote in films were only a small part of his poetic oeuvre. He is rightly held in high regard for his poetry. Acclaimed lyricist Shahryar of Umraao Jaan fame and fourth Urdu writer to win the Jnanpith Award in 2008, died of lung cancer last night at Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh. Shahryar belonged to a Muslim Rajput family, and retired as the chairman of the Urdu Department at the Aligarh Muslim University. Originally christened Akhlaq Mohammed Khan, he was recognized for his lyrics in Muzaffar Ali's films like Gaman, Umrao Jaan and Anjuman. Urdu academician and poet Akhlaq Mohammed Khan 'Shahryar' has stayed away from film music for years and says he can never write for today's songs as they just provide instant gratification.'The songs that are being made nowadays - I can't write such songs. It's not that I am against those songs but I know I can't write like that. That is why I am not writing for films any more.
