New recruit Wim starts his first day as professional fire fighter. Adjutant Haegeman puts him under the care of veteran Corp. Goossens. This proves to be a good idea, as during their first fire, Wim freezes when he has to jump through a wall of flames. Albert pulls him through, in a way "christening" him in fire. Together they save an old woman trapped on the third floor of a burning house. Ronnie Abeloos comes late for roll call. Again. Adj. Haegeman puts him on report for the Colonel. Abeloos explains that he has to take care of his son, because his cheating wife has disappeared once again. Firemen Buelens and Pauwels are called in to exterminate a wasp colony, only to find that there is no colony to be found. The widow who called them, just had a dire need to talk to someone, and called the fire brigade. Buelens confides in Pauwels that he is afraid that the new PR-officer will take his beloved fire fighting museum from him. Who that PR-officer will be, is still open. Two candidates remain. Colonel Halleux finally decides on the female candidate, Tiene De Vijlder, in order to add a female presence to the all male team. It also becomes quite clear that Adj. Haegeman isn't universally loved. His brusque manner and his iron discipline make more enemies than friends.

After a fire in bicycle workshop, Corp. Albert Goossens offers his personal services to the stricken owner. Not entirely selfless, as he has seen an antique statuette amongst the debris. Albert is a somewhat shady antiques dealer in his off hours. Col. Halleux inspects the seniors nursing home, but refuses to give a positive report. None of the necessary works have been done. Koen Pauwels' attempt to seduce Tiene is easily side-stepped by the latter. When he visits his sick wife in hospital, Marcel Van Oppen meets the victim of a fire (Episode 1) he has helped save. They have dinner together in the hospital's cafeteria. Tiene continues her attempts to soften up Roger Buelens, who is still pretty antagonistic towards her. Offering him the job of archivist and his own office goes a long way. The team is called in to rescue two window cleaners, when their bridge cables snap, and the two are clinging to the bridge for dear life. Somehere along the tenth floor. The relationship between Col. Halleux and Tiene De Vijlder deepens. The council man for fire prevention and environment isn't too happy with the colonel's stand on the nursing home.

Ronnie Abeloos prepares for a bodybuilding competition, and the team is looking forward to attending the spectacle. Crewmen Van Oppen and Boenders are called to take a psychiatric patient to the asylum. Fred adopts the man's dog. Tiene and Roger get into a quibble about the organization of the information folders. Roger prefers his chronological system, but Tiene wants an organization by topic. The party puts some serious pressure on Col. Halleux to redact his report on the nursing home, but he flatly refuses. The team is called out to a fire at the nursing home later that night, but aside from a lot of smoke, they cannot find a fire. One of the residents has snuck back in but is rescued. Apparently part of the original ceiling, hidden behind the lowered ceiling, has collapsed and created a dust cloud that was distributed via the ventilation system. The disgruntled council member uses this oversight on Col. Halleux' part to up the pressure, but the colonel doesn't give in. Marcel lies to his sick wife about his meetings with another woman. The council man and the matron of the nursing home conspire to have Col. Halleux fired.

Tonight's intervention is for a house fire. At first the team deem the situation under control, as the neighbors assure them that there's no one at home. Then they find out a boy is stuck at the top floor. Van Oppen and Abeloos are called in to free two people stuck in an elevator. One of them is drunk as a skunk, the other is hysteric. The council member for fire prevention and environment tries to recruit Adjutant Haegeman in his quest to destroy Colonel Halleux. Maurice says neither "yes" nor "no". Roger Buelens is grudgingly working to convert his entire information archive to a topic-based system, making some 5.000 copies of articles that belong in different categories. Halleux and Tiene share a drink after a meeting late at night.

Marcel brings good news : the team has won in the lottery. Roger immediately decides that WIm should not get anything, as he hasn't paid his lottery fee for the last two weeks. Thanks to the fire brigade"s social fund, Ronnie can bring his son to boarding school. Albert thinks he has found a gold mine when he is contacted by a widow to buy a painting. Koen and Ronnie get called in for a prostitute that has fainted. Her pimp doesn't want to let her be taken to hospital, as she is an illegal. The council member wants to force Col. Halleux to fire Tiene by cutting his budget. Marcel gets a note from Paulien, the woman he helped save in episode 1, that expresses more than just gratitude.
